I am away from home on a business trip and just found out that my beagle, Bayley, is not doing very well. My partner noticed that she was shaking and it appears she has something hard near her anus. She has been having trouble defecating and has bloody poop. I worry it is an obstruction or worse, cancer. She is only 5 and has been a healthy girl up until this point.

She is on her way to the emergency vet, but I am 3000 miles away and feel helpless. I am not scheduled to come home until Wed night. I am keeping my fingers crossed that it is something minor, maybe an infection or something wrong with an anal gland. All I can do is sit in my hotel room and worry.

I hope she's okay, make sure you keep us updated.

Maybe she's just swallowed something she shouldn't have (like a nut or something hard) and is having trouble passing it?

sending well wishes your way, and to the sweet sweet pup! I know it is difficult. They are like children, or a family member! Keep us posted. Hoping that it's just something that she could not pass on her own.

Well, I just got an update. Bayley has an abcessed anal gland, and it ruptured just prior to going to the vet - blood everywhere. She has a second hole now to the right of her anus. She is in a lot of pain. She will be having surgery within the next hour to drain, clean and repair the area. They will have to put in a drain that will remain in place for 5 days or so. The vet doesn't think there is cancer, but can't rule it out until they do the surgery and see what is in there. I feel so bad for my poor beagle girl.

I won't know the outcome of her surgery before I go to sleep tonight, so hopefully I will have good news that all went well when I get up tomorrow morning.

Poor Bayley, and poor you. It's so hard to be away from our babies when they're sick or in pain. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif At least, you know what's wrong now. Sending good thoughts your way, and hoping you'll have encouraging news tomorrow.

Oh, I am so sorry that you are having to deal with this while you are away. I am sure she will be ok. That actually happened to my frined's dog a few weeks ago from an allergic reaction to grass. Hang in there, I am sure she'll be ok.

Positive thoughts going your way Bayley. Finger and paws crossed. Hope the surgery goes smoothly. Those miserable anal glands! They cause our little furry butts soooo much trouble.

Awww poor Bayley - sending hugs and kisses for a speedy recovery.

Rosa had the same thing a few years ago. They operated immediately and she had a drain for a while too. She has never had any problems since and I'm sure Bayley is gonna be just fine.
