Hello, we have a Beagle Terrier mix that is a jumping king. But he is always hungry. He would eat all day if I let him. As for chew toys. He loves to chew. After reading about Rawhide bones, I am now afraid to give them to him. For he will eat them. But I want to give him something to chew on with out eating it.

What should I do?

I give Maggie a frozen Kong. That keeps her busy quite a while. I stuff it with a litte peanut butter and vegetables and freeze in a zip lock. I also buy inexpensive stuffed toys. She loves to unstuff them and then run around with the empty shell. Occasionally she will chew on a nylabone but it is not her preference.
She gets a raw bone sometimes, or a Moo brand bone which is processed so it will crumble into tiny pieces but does not splinter or break off into big pieces. My pet store also sells antlers now. Maggie does not care for them but my friends dog chews on them for hours.

Josie and Charlie have destroyed more than one black Kong. They still last a while. The nyla-bone is a favorite of theirs. There are three in the house for them. They also chew on a couple old tshirts and socks I tied a knot into. I have found that Josie prefers to just walk around with a tennis ball (small one I got at the pet store). She just loves it. Doesn't chew it much, just walks around with it all proud.

We tried the cheap stuffed toys, and the good ones. None last any longer than the other. There are some left with no stuffing we leave for them, but generally, no more stuffed toys. Too much stuffing to clean up 5 minutes after they empty it.

Zelda has two different black kongs. We stuff the bone shaped one with milkbones. But the classic shaped Kong we stuff with tons of things!! Sometimes (if she's reallllly lucky) I buy a packet of doggy veggies and gravy and pour it in there and freeze it.

I might get her the spaceship black kong for something different to have around. But pretty much black Kongs are the only toys that stick around.

She gets the odd Kong brand tennis ball, but that lasts a day or two.

Still need to try nyla bones tho!

We call Shiloh's un-stuffed toys, his road-kill toys. He has a duck, monkey, groundhog and a squirrel that he has destroyed. He'll take all the stuffing out and leave it in a neat little pile and run around like a madman with the flat shell. My husband and I joked that we need to start our own line of Roadkill Toys for dogs. I even thought about putting a tire track across them.

JoJo tends to shred her tennis balls...shearing the fuzz off with her teeth.
We can't give her the ropes to chew on, but she loves tug-o-war with them. She also has a flat squirrel that we got at PetSmart that she loves to run around with.
She has a nylabone, not super fond of it, but she'll chew on it if she's in the mood.
She LOVES kongs and has destroyed 1 red one so far. I really do need to grab her some black ones, and some that are different shaped.
She actually loves her rawhides, the Dingo ones are her favorite. I'll have to go read up on them and see what the hubbub is all about!

Why are you concerned about him eating raw hides? I wasn't aware that that was a concern..... Mine gets rawhides, usually one rawhide stick each per day! They also get Kongs stuffed with things... I melt peanut butter around their kibble and sometimes freeze it too. They have some interest in their Nylabone and other rubber toys. They also love to unstuff the stuffed toys and then play tug-of-war with the empty shell. I have made them a few braided fleece ropes which they liked. I also get the big beef ears for them to chew on... they're like rawhide but take a little longer for mine to eat b/c of the curves and stuff.

Deer Antlers i've heard are becoming very popular...still can't get a hold of some at petco they keep selling out might just order them online but its a touch chew, natural etc with some beneficial minerals in the antler itself.

Frozen kongs are the best way to go.

I've tried those tough stitched toys.....ha.....they last a few minutes at most, longest probably 3 days and that was a really good one my mom got a work.

I go with cow bones from a butcher, thos last a good solid two weeks.

He has this one stuffed lamb he loves to death and wont finish off (totally ripped the face off) thats lasted 2 weeks but its always a tossup with beags.
