WHAT AGE IS EFFECTIVE TO TRAIN?

7 weeks is definitely old enough to start training him at home. Not sure how old they need to be to go into a Puppy Kindergarden class or if he is well enough for that.

You'll need lots of patience. We told ours as puppies "no bite". It has been so long since they were puppies.

I'm sure others can help with this better.

I have used a squirt bottle but for barking, not for biting. It is effective with my beagles because they don't particularly like to get wet. When our puppy (lab) was biting I would gently take him by the muzzle and say no bites. Now I just have to say no bites and he stops.

Maggie started puppy class as soon as she finished all of her shots. I have used a spray bottle for biting but not until after she was through teething. When she was a little baby I just said no biting and gave her an appropriate chew toy. Puppy classes helped us a lot. We got good ideas and saw that all the puppies had the same behaviors.

We're working on no bites with Duke, too. We haven't been to puppy classes yet, because he's not through his shots.

I have a friend who said her puppy trainer told her to say, "Ow!" really loud when they bite even a little. This is supposed to get them to ease up on the bite and not bite you hard. I tried it yesterday and it did make him quit, but we'll see what happens in the future.

I usually tell him to stop and then give him a nylabone.

Chloe's mommy, that is so funny. I once had a kitten jump in the tub with me. Boy was he surprised. I had to get him out fast because he saw me as safety and those claws were really sharp. Maggie, however, seems afraid of water and doesn't come near the tub.
