Hi Rick,

I had Daisy on Wellness for about 3 months and she did very well on it. Her coat got really shiney and she loved the taste. (Chicken)

I changed her over to Canidae because my sister started her Golden on it and she said I should try it. It's listed as #4 on a list of rated dog foods by nutrition content. It has no wheat, corn or soy and, at the time, I was worried about Daisy doing a lot of scratching. Now no scratching, so I'm keeping her on it.

I imagine that Wellness is a very good holistic food and has lots of good things in it. It's made by Old Mother Hubbard and that's a real good company.

Well, that's my 2 cents. After two or three months you'll know.

Some canned dog food is a mixture of water and fat, made attractive to dogs by adding pigeon poo!!! This from our animal supply shop. We feed our two a can each of pure meat (400 grms) and a handfull of dried food. During the day they get treats (dried gut etc). The best bet though, with a very overweight dog, is to go to the vet and get a diet sheet. Most vets also sell diet food. At least they do here.
You'll be surprised how quickly your beagle will lose weight once you stick to a strict diet.

I agree, Pedigree is absolute no no. I ran out of the Nutro brand can food and didn't have time to drive all the way to Petsmart. Ask my daughter to just get one from the store. She came back with Pedigree. It is very oily when I open it, one tablespoon made my Charlie sick, got the runs for 2 long days! I usually feed charlie one tablespoon of can(Nutro Lamb) along with 2 cups of dry(Nutro Utra Chicken), mix it with a little water as gravy.

Just for the heck of it these sites list ingredidents in their dog food:

Wellness (click on the food you're interested in to get the list of ingredients):

Chicken Soup (click on the food you want to look at towards the bottom):

Nutro (you'll have to do a little searching, there are many different foods listed, but they do list ingredients once you click on the food you want to look at):

I had the girls in the "chicken soup" brand food and they had such gas. So I switched them to Innova and I thought that was giving them gas, but I stopped giving them the Wellness biscuits and the gas went away.

I think its a matter of what your dog will eat within your budget.
