OMG, was he so glad to see his daddy. you folks wouldnt have believed it. he is walking perfectly on his own.
the surgon ( doc platt) came down to talk to me. he was honestly excited. he said its very rare to have a dog with this much willpower and energy after such a ordeal so soon. he was excited for bernie. his new student (which follows up with bernie on the hour) came out to go over things with me. his recovery, his new diet, everything that went on, ect ect ect. she was excited for bernie too. they came walking down the hall and bernie was pulling her all the way. damn he was so glad to see his daddy. then his first student came to see me too. she stayed after work to just tell me hello, and to tell bernie good bye. his local doc will be pulling his staples out(25 of them). hes gotta go back to see doc platt in one month. bernie hit the ground running as soon as we came through the back door. "STOOOOOOOOOOOOP",
i yelled out at the top of my lungs. hes not allowed to do that for several weeks. my arms were full of all the stuff i took with me and couldnt hold his leash. his rearend came to a holt pretty quick. off to his crate he went. i hated to do that but i have to. its just gotta be for a couple of weeks. platt said to me that it was amazing to see all the stuff they pulled from his spine, but yet, bernie is up and around to fast to soon. he was honestly stunned.
i told him it came from all the prayers hes had from so many. i told him of the 124 different prayer chains from around the world i had put bernie on one at a time. i told him that beagle world forum was praying for him as well. he just kinda looked at me. i told him "prayer works doctor platt". he smiled and said he was looking forward to seeing bernie in a month.
i have the address of the head dean at the vet school. im gonna write her a letter telling her of my experience at the school, and of the students and doc's that worked on bernie.
all just to say thank you to them.
they deserve that much dont ya think?

awwww....
I can picture the wonderful reunion and the happiness you both felt.
I'm sooooooo happy for you guys!! :bounce2:
This is such great news!!! Bernie must have missed you so much. Sometimes we have to tell the beags to slow down and enjoy life...
It's great that Bernie's home, and that his surgery went so well. :bounce: As for prayer, of course it works. When I had surgery a couple of years ago, my surgeon prayed with us before I was taken into the operating room. I did great, too. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

I'm so happy to hear that Bernie is home and safe. It sounds like he's happy too. Give him lots of extra lovin' from his friends here in Florida!
thank you everybody. bernie is still pretty "drunk" in the legs yet. i dont know if thats normal.(those who have been through this please speak up).
it is so good to have him home with me. hes not liking his crate rest at all.
i hope his recovery goes well and i do my part right. please keep the prayers going. he needs them still.
Oh Ricksconnected!

How could God have not heard all of the prayers for Bernie?

Henry and I are happy for Bernie and you that he is home and safe and happy with his daddy.
Hi Rick
So glad that Bernie is back with you.
The recovery from this type of surgery is generally very slow and you need to be patient. Ten years ago I had a 9 year old Beagle that had six discs repaired and it took several months before she was back to normal, we managed to keep her quiet and after a few weeks she was well enough to have a very short walk. She was never able to jump around like she did before but still enjoyed life.
This type of surgery is very invasive and they will be very uncomfortable for quite a long time.
Do not rush things and keep up with the crate rest.
Yvonne
Rick, I'm so glad for you both and that Bernie has bounced back so soon  It's not surprising having such a devoted daddy like you /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif .

Boeing and I will continue sending good thoughts your way.

How wonderful to have such a joyous and grand reunion with your beloved beagle, Bernie. I am sure God guided you each step of the way and because of your long and dutiful journey provided you with the best possible outcome. I can only imagine how happy both you and Bernie are. Give more belly rubs from us in Florida.
im still a little worried because bernie is still really weak in the legs. am i expecting to much to soon? ive never been through this before, nor have i seen it either. hes still struggling a good bit. please, anybody thats been through this let me know. am i expecting to much to soon?
Hi Rick, I have never been through this so I can't offer any advice. Just wanted you know I am thinking of you and Bernie and will continue praying for you both.
Hi Rick - unfortunately I really don't have any info for you given that Booker's surgery was at her neck and I think the recovery is way different when it is up there than lower down... I suspect Murphy's Dad might have some useful info but I think he's away for a few days... if you are really worried about whether things are going as they should be my recommendation would be to call the vet and ask. Thinking of you...
Rick,

I'm not sure of the answer either. The fact that he is able to stand and walk sounds like a good sign. But if you feel that he is getting worse or not progressing as you feel he should, call the vet school.

Follow your instinct. It's saved Bernie once already.
Hey Rick, I don't know the answer either. Is there anyone at the hospital where he had his surgery you could call and ask? Or you could call your vet on Monday and ask if Bernie is progressing normally after his surgery. It is probably completely normal. But it wouldn't hurt to double check with your vet.

Keep us posted on his progress and give him a big kiss on the nose from us!!
Hi Rick
As I said in my earlier post you need to be patient. From what I can remember it was a very slow recovery so slow in fact thet I would never put another dog through it. But she got there in the end and lived another five years quite normally.Flame had 6 discs repaired in the lumbar region of her spine and it must have been at least 6 weeks before she was walking well but after a couple of weeks she could manage up the road and back.I do think that you are being too keen to see an improvement it will be a slow haul but he should get there in the end.Think positive Yvonne.
vonny

hes got a big heart. hes trying so hard. im proud of him to be honest.when walking he moves pretty good. its just when standing still he still a little wobbly. he gets his staples out this week.
that will be nice. im so scared he will pull them out while im at work. you said you would never put another dog through it. putting bernie to sleep just wasnt an option. he would never give up on me, so im not going to give up on him.
theres no road i wont travel for/with this beagle.
Rick,

Sorry, I've been out of town without a PC.

It will take time for Bernie to recover. He just went through major surgery. You need to be VERY patient. Do as you vet says. Keep him quiet and calm.

Our Murphy was far worse when he went in for surgery. He took a year just to stand on his own. Your Bernie is ahead of the game. Its a long road to recovery... and yes, you are expecting to much, too soon.
/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif . Keep us posted on his progress.
