We woke up early this morning and headed to LA to get Violet, it was a 3-1/2 hour trip with Duke, his longest ever. I had bought the car harnesses and it worked great for Duke, but I got the same size for Violet and it was too small, so she was out of it in a flash. She spent most of the trip home on my lap.
When we got to the shelter, I saw a woman with a beagle across the street and when I pointed the beagle out to Dave, the woman asked us if it was Duke and we realized that the woman was our adoption coordinator and the beagle was Violet! So we followed them a few doors down to a park where she a Duke sniffed to their hearts content. A few minutes later, she was assured that we had a good beagle match and we went back inside to fill out the paperwork. The coordinator told me she got more calls on Violet than any other dog she posted! Those beagles are popular.
Violet (we're not sure if that will stay her name, Dave wants to change it to Duchess) was a stray that was in heat when they picked her up and that's all they know of her. She is friendly and gets along with other animals. She looks very young and from the looks of her nipples, she had a litter of pups already. She's such a tiny girl, I can't imagine her being a mommy so young. Poor thing. I did notice that her back legs bow a little and at times she hops on them a bit, which makes me wonder if that was a complication from giving birth too young. She was spayed last Wednesday and they said though they took out the uterus, she had an infection in it, so they sent me home with antibiotics for her. They also gave her another shot series and bortedello vaccine. I did notice her chest sounds a little congested, but she was really excited and panting hard. We're taking her to the vet this week for a check up and rabies shot, so I'll ask about that then.
She did very well on the car ride home. Much of the time, in my lap, playing in the back with Duke sometimes, and finally laying down and sleeping. We stopped for lunch and had to get them a plain burger to share, which they loved!
We got home and she sniffed everything, inside and out. She also went potty outside, good girl! She barely glanced at Phoebe (who was not amused that we got another dog.LOL) and she liked Cassie, but Cassie got snappy with her, so we are watching that situation closely. I think because Cassie has always been the only girl and even though Cassie's spayed, she used to not like unspayed females. Violet is spayed, but I read that if they are spayed while in heat, it could still last for a few weeks, so maybe that's what Cassie was smelling. It was only one incident and nobody was hurt, just scared, but we have to keep an eye. Plus, Cassie hasn't felt well lately, and had diarrhea, so I've had her off food since yesterday afternoon and she is probably grouchy because of that.
She and Duke get along great! He gets a little jealous at times, but that won't last long (well, it will, but it's something he can live with). The only problem right now is they want to run and play and wrestle, and she can't do much of that for another week or so because of her surgery. Her stitches are internal and the external scar has surgical glue, so no need to have them removed, which is good.
Here are a few pics of Duke and Violet, now they are tired out and sleeping inside comfortably. Should be an interesting next few days! LOL
