I hate being one of these people who says they can't afford their dog. When I got my dogs I was married and beteween us we had a pretty decent income and I figured we could afford dogs. Now I am single again and my Casper is approaching 12, his heart is starting to weaken. He has a heart murmur. This means his heart is not fully closing and the blood isn't pumping properly. The result is fluid getting in the lungs. He is taking a fluid pill which drains the fluids but he has also had to start taking Vetmedin. This is a very expensive drug that helps the heart beat more strong. Basically this is costing me $200 a month (for all drugs, extra care etc) plus the vets bills (50 a vist, 35 for follow up appt. blood tests, xrays). I have heard that there is a website that shows drugs intended for humans that can replace the dogs drugs. Does anyone know about this? any experiences with Vetmedin/alternate drugs?

You might try googling her medications and see if there is a generic eqivalent. We had a small dog that had COPD and she took baby antibiotics as she was getting infections all the time. We just went to the grocery store pharmacy. She actually liked this better than the dog equivalent because it was in liquid form and bubble gum flavored.
