Hi everyone

Well, Tippi's test results are in and she has been diagnosed with Atypical Cushing's. Her Progesterone and 17OH Progesterone levels indicated the presence of increased adrenal activity, so Dr. Oliver, UofTenn. recommended that we start her out with 6mg of Melatonin, twice a day for the next 3 months. Then it's back to the Vet for a blood test to see if the levels have changed. If there is no change we will schedule an ultrasound to see if she has an adrenal tumor. Now I have to read up on adrenal tumors. When I entered College back in 1973, I seriously considered Veterinary Medicine, now I wish I had, since I am finding all of this a bit overwhelming and I am not the most patient person in the world. However, Tippi has fully recovered from the test, and has been a bit more active since going on the Melatonin. I don't know if the change is due to the fact that we now have a diagnosis, or that the Melatonin is doing what it is supposed to do. Anyway, that's where we are at right now. Just wanted to let you all know and to thank you all for your concern and support.

Here's hoping that the melatonin will be the key to helping Tippi. When our Traveler had sky-high liver enzyme readings, and we put him on milk thistle, the result was dramatic improvement. Hopefully, you'll have the same kind of results with melatonin.

I hope everything works out for the best. I can be impatient too, especially when it comes to the health of myself and my family (which includes Sox and Caesar). Research it on-line and maybe it will get easier to understand. Keep your chin up /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif and keep us posted on her progress.

Lora, Dr. Oliver at U of T has been highly reccomended by several people on my Cushings group. Sounds like you and Tippi are in good hands. I hope the Melatonin helps her. I'm not as familiar with Atypical Cushings as regular Cushings; I guess the medication given for Atypical must be different? If there's anything I can do, please let me know. Your Tippi will be in my thoughts.

Lora: If Dr. Oliver was the one who recommended waiting three months for the ultrasound, I think you should take it easy and enjoy Tippi's improved energy (for whatever reason). Dr. Oliver is really amongst the top specialists in his field of endocrinology -- put your trust in him. Did he give you an avenue to contact him directly or do you have to go through your vet? If you can contact him directly, one suggestion would be to make notes during the next few weeks, i.e., increased energy today, didn't want to walk, etc. and then shoot him an e-mail or a note with an update and any questions you might have. Of course, if you see something concerning, contact him before then. Would be a good idea to make notes anyway -- keep track of how Tippi acts during the couple of hours after he is given the melatonin, what he eats/drinks during the day, etc. You should keep track of his food and water intake since increases in those are typical signs of Cushings. You can actually measure how much water you put in his bowl each day and how much he drinks. Hugs to Tippi from me and Maggie!
