Re: UPDATE! 6-14

Wow...*dusts off thread* cough, cough!*

Due to circumstances I am sure you are all aware of by now, I'm seriously considering moving back my Doggie Day to August 9...maybe all the way to August 21.

For one thing there's the money issue.

For another, the class I just added won't end until Aug 7th. And as I've said before, I don't want to take on a dog right in the middle of a semester. Baaaad idea.

I am still determined to get my dog this year, just not as soon and I'd hoped.

Re: UPDATE! 6-14

I knew I'd regret looking on Petfinder.com so often...

Check this beauty out; she's almost too good to be true!

Her page says good with kids and kitties!
Quick; anyone know how I can raise her adoption fee...like yesterday?

I know it's a slim hope and probably incredibly selfish, but I hope she stays there until I can have the money. She;d be perfect for us!

Re: UPDATE! 6-14

She might be perfect for you, but there will be other Beagles that would be perfect for you. I know that deep down you would be happier if she found a good forever home soon.... even if it's not with you.

update... just looked at the website. Carrie, she has been adopted. There are tons of gorgeous Beagles there, too. I just can't understand people...

still dogless

Guess others like her too...she's adopted already.

I know... I am happy that she's adopted and she'll be safe. A sweetie like that deserves a great home.

Sometimes it's not so bad and I feel like I can wait for however long it takes; other times the waiting feels like it will kill me.

What can I do? With temperatures reaching the triple digits, I can't volunteer at Petsmart forever. I had to miss this week already (it's ten miles away). Should I just stop looking until I can get a dog?

Re: still dogless

It is really hard to not be looking, I totally understand. I HAVE dog and i cant have anymore but yet I still am constantly CONSTANTLY looking at the beagle rescue site where I found arty.

I actually thought of you this weekend bc the beagle rescue site brought many of their dogs to petsmart this weekend and I went to go see. I thought of you and how much you might have enjoyed it. I know you live in socal but this rescue site sometimes has dogs available in socal too, you could always ask if you could help out. I am sure socal has a similar rescue but heres the norcal one:

main norcal beagle rescue site

and the available dogs

oh and PS I saw carson in person and although he may look adorable in pictures he was kind of a whole lotta beagle trouble in person. very VERY vocal, and not friendly with other dogs

Re: still dogless, but UPDATE!

It turns out I had to drop my Photoshop class (and no, not because it ends later in the year than the others!). It was getting out way too late for me to be able to take the bus home, and if I got out of class early, I'd miss an entire hour of it.
So I just decided to cut my losses and drop, rather than fail.

Now, once again, the school semester ends officially on July 24. If all goes as planned I'll be able to hold to my original plan of getting a dog on July 26.

As stated before, the local rescue does indeed have Beagles availible far more often than originally thought, so I won't have to drive to hours and hours to get my doggie. Plus they rescue cats as well, so maybe I can talk them in cat-testing.
I don't have much doubt about the kid friendliness. As long as Joseph (my nephew) moves slow, both dog and toddler should be fine. Joseph is nearly three now and rambunctious, but as gentle as can be with the cat. I need to get some pictures of them together.

Dogless Update!

Today I got to walk my very first Beagle!

No, I didn't adopt one yet. I got to walk one while volunteering today.

It was a female Beagle, mostly black with some brown, white legs and underbelly, and brown freckles. She was kinda chubby, but very cute. She stood about 14 to 15 high (I think). She was ecstatic to be let out on leash and she went nuts, sniffing literally everything in sight. She pulled so hard she nearly choked herself, poor thing! (dang slip-leashes...) She looks well over 5 years old, due to the whiteness on her face. It was almost impossible to keep hold of her leash. Her strength was amazing. She was almost as strong as my old dog, Annie! I thought she'd cut off the circulation to my hand!

Anyway she was a real sweetheart who, in typical Beagle fashion, loves everyone. When her tail wagged, her whole rear end wagged with it.
I didn't expect her ears to be so huge. One completely covered my hand! One very odd un-Beagle thing she did was be utterly silent. Not a single howl, bay, or bark out of her the whole time.
She did whimper with excitement whenever she saw people or other dogs, but that was it. She wasn't 'kissy' either. That was the first dog ever who did not even try and lick me.

She's on my prayer list now. I hope she finds a good home! She's a sweetheart!

As if there wasn't enough already to seal it, that totally sold me on the Beagle breed. She was more entertaining than anything I'd ever seen before. I can't wait to get my own Beag.

Re: Dogless Update!

Well congratulations on your first walk!! The poor girl was probably so excited about being out and able to explore things! Don't rule here out (if she's still available) when you start your search! If you haven't gotten one already, I would suggest purchasing a harness because some beags can pull very hard on walks. I'm sure there are many happy walks in store for you in the near future.

Re: Dogless Update!

GAH!

I just went online and found out that I'm not going to get my check until July 28...AFTER the semester ends! Aside from the logistical problems of that, that means my dog day is delayed yet again.

I guess I better not give it any set date. I'll just get my dog when I get my dog. *shrugs*

Carrie, I think that it's great you do this volunteer work. It does so much good to the dogs, and I'm sure to you too.
The 2 day delay is not that bad, I'm sure that since you wait until the 26th, 2 more days will be a walk in the park. Maybe you can go and pick out your dog on that designated A-day, and when you get the check, pick it up (I'm not sure if that will be possible, but worth a try).

Re: Dogless Update!

How fun that you got to experience walking a beagle! They do enjoy being out and about.

After waiting this long, 2 days will be a snap. Then when you get your beag, it will make it even sweeter.

Duke never makes any noise on walks, either. But he is pretty quiet for a beagle.

Re: Dogless Update!

Yeah, good point. I'll make a beeline for the Bank after getting the check and then go shopping.
The hard part will be not getting carried away!
I can't get my Beagle right then, though, since the rescue isn't open on Mondays. But then they don't let the animals go home until they're 'fixed' (guess they got too many people who adopted, then never got the pet fixed), so I may have to wait anyway. If at all possible I'd love to pick out my dog the Friday or Saturday before, maybe put down a deposit or something so someone else won't adopt them. Then I'll probably be visiting them every day until I can take them home.

I can hardly believe it; even with the delay, it's only a month away! Whee!
