Hi all! I haven't been around in a while 'cause of a very hectic life. We've moved and are in the process of cleaning up the house and surrounding property. About half the junk has been cleared out of the backyard and we have four rooms painted. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/whistle.gif The colors look great! So much better than that drab flat white. That busted garage door will hopefully be getting fixed by the end of the month, and I'll finally be able to return to school!

The reason for this post is a dog-search update. I know I said I'd have one by Spring, but the job situation has been a bear. I'd stil prefer a rescue dog, but as Beagles almost never come into the rescues around here, I may end up buying from a breeder. There is a very nice one out here. Anyone ever heard of Mojave Desert Beagles?

Anyway, the financial situation is looking up, and I'm HOPING I can get a dog by mid-June. My ultimate goal is have one by my birthday, July 7. This waiting has been driving me batty, but there is finally light at the end of the tunnel. Keep your fingers crossed. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazy.gif

Re: Temporarily Dogless may soon be dogless no mor

Yup. I did check out Beagles and Buddies. Only problem is it's almost 70 miles away! :O I don't mind, but the main question mark is my dad. I don't know how far he's willing to drive and he's my only transportation at this point.

Re: Temporarily Dogless may soon be dogless no mor

Thanks for the advice! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/eek.gif

I really don't like to adopt a dog sight unseen. They do have pictures and short profiles up for each dog, but I'd much rather go there in person for a meet-and-greet. Besides, they're so picky themselves about who gets their dogs I don't think they'd be willing to do that (meet halfway). They've got a LOT of detailed questions on their adoption applications; how high the fence is, which yards are fenced, where the dog will be living (indoors, outdoors, or both), if there's young kids in the house, other pets, etc.

Beaglesmom: Wow, thank you so much for all that info on Mojave Desert Beagles! I really couldn't care less about lines and pedigree (heck I grew up with mutts!). All I care about is if the dog is healthy and friendly. Going to a breeder is still a last resort for me. If I do, though, you can be sure I'm going to ask questions like crazy.

Boeing's Mom: Yes, I am definately planning on changing my username, though to what, I have no idea.

One thing I definately have to put on my 'shopping list' is a camera!

Re: Temporarily Dogless may soon be dogless no mor

beaglechaser- I hope I didn't make it sound pickiness was a bad thing; it's not. I can understand why. I wish ALL dog rescues were this thorough! It's just something new to me, that's all. You see, this will be the very first dog I actually, legally OWN. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rolleyes.gif All the others we either got from friends or adopted from the shelter, and then, I never got a look at the papers. I was always too involved with the new dog to even care about watching Dad sign. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/tired.gif

Now the roles will likely be reversed. Though dad claims he doesn't want a dog so 'soon' (nearly two years!) after his dog Pokey, he's an old softie andnhe'll probably be too busy playing with my beag to notice me signing the papers. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Oh, July is WAAAY to far away! Speed up, time!

Re: Temporarily Dogless soon NOT dogless: UPDATE!

/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smokin.gif

The backyard is nearly dog-ready! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rolleyes.gif All that's left to do is fix the back fence and side gate, and it will be ready for a dog! Yay!

I did a little math and homework last night and figured out just how much I need before I get my Beagle. After taking another look at Mojave's website, I have decided that come heck or high water, I am going the rescue route.

Ack, went on Petfinder today and there's a Beagle only a couple cities over! He's a one year old male (named Snoopy of course), probably a mix, already fixed and great with kids. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/dancemm2.gif The only thing holding me back at this point is I still haven't gotten my 'safety net' saved up. Until that is in the bag, I'm going to have to wait. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cool.gif The reason is, I don't want something to happen and find out I can't afford a lifesaving procedure. Better to be safe than sorry.

I have totally resolved to talk to my Dad TONIGHT about the transportation thing. "Hey, dad! I'll pay for the gas!"

More updates as they come.

joe: Oh, yeah. That irks me, too. Not every breed is perfect for every person, but too many buy dogs for their looks. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/bounce.gif For me, the cuteness is the icing on the cake. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazy.gif

I think I know what you mean, Smeagle. No one wants a dog with hereditary problems. At any rate, since I'll be going the rescue Beagle route, I'll know what I'm getting. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/eek.gif Like I said, I don't think questions are a bad thing at all. In fact, I welcome them!

I fixed the secondary back gate! The latticework was crooked and the latch broke, so I fixed that. Now I just need to patch one more hole and that project will be done. Next up; filling in holes!

TempoDogless UPDATE!

I filled in the holes next to the fence today. Just waiting on those fence boards....

Okay. I THINK I finally have a time frame in which I'll be getting my Beagle. The first would be between June 28th and July 12. The ABSOLUTE latest would be August 23.

Sooo, in between 50 and 100 days, I will have my dog. WHEW! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/hapfac01.gif

In 50 to 100 days, I will have my dog...YAY!!!!! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/toofunny.gif

Re: TempoDogless UPDATE!

Nah, Chewbacca's WAY overdone as a dog name. Yoda sounds more like a Chihuahua name. And Ewok...too fluffy. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/sick.gif

I do have a whole long list of Star Wars names for dogs, though. Here's a short list:

BOYS
Luke
Kenobi
Kyp (a character from a book)
Raynar (another character from a book)
Han
Wedge (one of the pilots)
Dash (yet another character from a book!)
Keyan (a Jedi)
Miko (another Jedi)

GIRLS
Aayla (that blue Jedi from the prequels)
Amidala
Brianna (character from a video game)
Jaina (another book character!)
Sola (Padme's sister)

For some reason girls' Star wars names are harder to find! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/sick.gif

If none of those fit, I'm going with one of these four:

Menolly
Robinton
Tribeca
Sundance

Menolly and Robinton are character from my favorite book, while Tribece and Sandance are the names of two Film festivals. Hee-hee. As you can see, I'm putting a LOT of thought into naming my Beag. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/eek.gif

YES! YES! YES! YES! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/toofunny.gif

I FINALLY talked to my dad about the drive and he said he would be willing to drive me to Beagles and Buddies as long as I paid for the gas. WOO-HOO! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rolleyes.gif

Re: TempoDogless UPDATE!

Cool name, but like I said, Ewoks are fluffy. Now if I were getting a poddle or a Pomeranian, that would work. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/sick.gif

Re: TempoDogless UPDATE!

Creature that runs around really fast? /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/hihi.gif The only creatures I know of that run around really fast are Speedy Gonzales and Roadrunner from the WB cartoons. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/tired.gif

Is it Star Wars related? Hmm...not sure if there are any super-fast Star Wars creatures. The only ones I know of are Tauntauns (which look like a cross between a dinosoar and a ram!) and Womprats.

Are you talking about another Ewok? There are a few Ewok names I know of; Wikkett, Teebo, Logray, Paploo, and Chirpa.

BTW, I did get an official position from everyone in the family. It's unanimous: all of us want a dog in the house again! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif Now all I need is my safety net, and off to the rescue we'll go!

Oh yeah! I thought up two more names! Schroeder and Merlin. I know Merlin was an old wizard, but I've been reading this series of books that show him as a youngster, and he's become one of my favorite mythical characters. As for Schroeder, I play the piano a lot, and my Beagle might want to sing along, LOL

Re: TempoDogless UPDATE!

Whew!

Okay. I have FINALLY gotten a definitive Adoption Day nailed down; Saturday, July 26, 2008. It's quite a bit later than I originally wanted, but I'd forgotten that I'll be taking Summer classes at the college this year and my birthday falls right in the middle of Midterms! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cry.gif

So, it is 71 days until I get mmy Beagle. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/eek.gif

Re: TempoDogless UPDATE!

The secondary fence is fixed! Not more wobbles and no more holes. Not even a Chihuahua could get out that way. I'm working on getting rid of those nasty foxtails now. I got a whole laundry-basketful this morning alone!
They're everywhere in our yard and there's now way I'm inviting trouble with those nasty buggers. Could you imagine what would happen with a Beagles long ears?

Oh BTW I called my boyfriend (who will be getting out of the Army early next month) and asked if he'd like to come along and help me pick out my Beagle. He said sure. YAY! Could life possibly get any better?

UPDATE! 5-25

Whew! I decided to dig out all the old dog stuff today and found quite a bit of stuff that I could still use!
-Three nylon leashes, still in excellent condition
-A gadget that goes on the seat belt and clips to the dog's harness
-A tandem dog-walking device (It's two strips of nylon with a metal ring in the center and clips on either end)
-the afore-mentioned tennis balls
-two brushes; a palm brush and a rubber currycomb
I tossed the leashes and tennis balls into the washer and they came out looking great! I also disinfected the brushes. I'm kind of on a budget, so I'm going to be looking for ways to save money wherever I can without cutting corners. I'm even looking at modifying a horses' saddle pad to use as a dog bed! It is washable, thank goodness!

A corner I have already designated as 'the dog corner' is starting to look like a kennel.
The leashes are hanging up on some pegs below a shelf, and the tennis balls and brushes are sitting on top of the shelf. Once I add the crate and the toys, it'll be all set for my Beagle.

If only July wasn't so far away!

UPDATE! 5-29

Here's yet another update!

I found out yesterday I'm suppossed to be getting a check from the college in about mid-July; it should give me just the boost my 'Safety Net' needs, and just in time, too!

My dad said he can make a 'doggie gate' out of some wood he has in the garage, so I drew him up a design. He says he can make it and then 'shoot it' with clear polyurethane. He found some that has ZERO odor once it dries!
There's so much wood out there he might be able to make more than one, which would be perfect for blocking forbidden areas.

So far, so good! My bro took the weed-eater out back and that helped a lot with the foxtails. There's still a lot out there, but they're more manageable now.

I keep having to order myself to keep calm. If I think too long about getting a dog again. I go totally nuts with excitement and want to dance.
At time it feels as though there's too much excitement for me to stand.

Thank you all sooo much for all your tips! They will be used, I'm sure, when my Beagle finally arrives.

58 days and counting!

Re: UPDATE! 6-14

Wow...*dusts off thread* cough, cough!*

Due to circumstances I am sure you are all aware of by now, I'm seriously considering moving back my Doggie Day to August 9...maybe all the way to August 21.

For one thing there's the money issue.

For another, the class I just added won't end until Aug 7th. And as I've said before, I don't want to take on a dog right in the middle of a semester. Baaaad idea.

I am still determined to get my dog this year, just not as soon and I'd hoped.
