We always take Regal with us when we visit my in-law's - they just adore him! Had quite the scare yesterday afternoon...my father in law had a fall coming up the stairs from their garage (scary moment in itself!). As my husband was helping him up, Regal made a run for the garage and out into the driveway. They've got a huge wooded yard and earlier in the day there were bunnies bouncing around. I thought for sure he was a goner.

But I calmly followed him out into the driveway gave a firm Regal come which stopped him dead in his tracks - just a couple feet away from me. Phew - so maybe not a great recall but I got his attention and scooped him right up. And then my heart started beating again!

Are you sure that you didn't have some kind of invisable line attached to Regal? If the Beaglebratz had the opportunity to go through an open door, it would have been bye-bye doggies - I'll see ya when you get home. They are deaf when it comes to me trying to call them bak - been there, tried it a few times and never with any luck. Last time Shiloh B. got loose (thanks to a bunny that saw us out walking one day and then he high-tailed it away - after struggling a bit to get Shiloh under control, he finally slipped his harness AND Halti. We got home about an hour and a half later after I found him over a mile away in a little wooded area. I am so glad, altho it mite not have been a great recall, at least it got Regal to stop.
This is a pic I took of Shiloh B. a couple of days after his break.

Shiloh longs for his freedom in the woods.

I am so glad he listened to you!! Scary is right!

And this is precisely why I am going to keep Rocky on a lead at ALL times when he is outside!! Right now he stays really close and isn't really interested in the great world beyond...but, I am noticing that he is noticing the activity across the road...the time draws nearer!!!!

I hope you're father-in-law is doing ok!

We've had several scares with our two. Unfortunately their limited recall goes out the window if they escape. One time Daisy got out when we were at our apartment and she took off across the parking lot. I shot out after her and didn't think I'd catch her. Fortunately the neighborhood cat (who was great with dogs) was lying around and Daisy couldn't resist stopping to get a sniff in. I was able to snatch her up. LOL
Then another time they got out while we were visiting my parents. The hubby and I weren't there. My mom was there with our two beags and their two big labs. One of the labs sneaked out the door and my two followed. Fortunately one of the neighbors was able to nab them. It's scary though!

ive stumbled across a few tricks on accident.
this brings up one.
often i take the 3 ameagles out for walks together. in every opportunity (fenced areas) i take them off their leashes and still walk with them, but let them stay a little ahead of me. the are kind of used to being 'off leash' but limited. i then work with them by saying stay by me and getting them to come closer.

so now, when one jets out, I call first, but only kinda like saying hi. and if i can tell the dog is on the move, i just get out there with him, kinda in front a little bit, and say, come on! lets go! they think that im taking them for a walk!!, i then say, stay by me, and then SNATCH em up. usually only takes a house or two down the block. and of course you need to see em go.
