Hubbie and I went beach fishing. We come home in the afternoon. Sadie and Pooh Stayed home. Sadie is limping badly on her right rear leg. And whining. We wisk her off to the vet. The vet looks at her and thinks it may be a torn ACL in her knee. She is limping very bad, but will put it down. The vet could not examine her as Sadie was so distraught. They gave her something to relax her, vet did a thorough exam. Her leg appeared fine and her spine appeared fine (well, she didn't yipe upon examination). This vet is very good at diagosing ACL tears. And it just didn't look like that after all. It could still be a partial tear.

Here is the scary part. After the shot to make her sleepy for the exam. They gave her a coritizone shot and a pain shot. When she was waking up from all of this, she started crying loudly. The vet said that some dogs do this when they are coming out of anesthesia. Well, she had a hard time coming out of it. She cried and cried and panted and lolled her tounge around for about an hour. We stayed at the vets office until she came all the way awake. She is still limping. We have a follow up appt. Saturday and they will re-examine it and do x-rays if she is still limping.

We are praying it is just a pulled ligiment or something simple for our baby Sadie.

We had just got her down to taking just 1 Rimadly (anti-inflammatory) from her bout with the heriated disk. So we are back on taking 2 a day for her leg.

Wish us luck and a few prayers certainly would not hurt. thanks,

Oh no! Poor Sadie, that's terrible. I really hope it's nothing serious. We'll be keeping our fingers, toes, and paws crossed for you. Give her extra kisses and belly rubs from us. Good luck with the x-rays.

Oh man, poor Sadie! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif

Of course positive thoughts and prayers coming your way.

Maybe the next time someone starts the A-Z game we should start the "A" with ACL there is sure enough of it going around with our little full speed ahead Beagles.

We think she hurt herself sitting in their window. They have their own room with a love seat pushed up to a window. They love to sit on the love seat and look out the window. But if a dog, cat, squirrel, person, etc goes by they go crazy. Jumping and barking and acting like wild heathens. Because she was fine when we left the house. And she came out of their room limping badly. We kept them out of their room while Sadie was recouperating from her herniated disk. I sure hate it but they may not can stay in their room anymore.

Oh, Sadie!! How awful -- and scarey /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/eek.gif

It's so good you could get her to the vet so quickly. Hopefully, it's a sprain and she'll get better soon.

Prayers and good thoughts going your way for you and your little girl.

Hope that Sadie feels better soon. I think some of her bad luck rubbed off on Booker tonight because she has started limping up a storm - she was at the dog park this afternoon and seemed fine, but now she is barely putting any weight on one of her rear legs and is looking really sorry for herself. She just came and buried her head in my lap - which she only does when she really wants attention. She has done this before, however, and it cleared up relatively quickly... we'll see how she is the next day or so and hopefully it is something that will just resolve itself soon.

Oh Booker, I hope your leg is better today.

Bernie's Dad: My hubbie is a very good fisherman. He works in a fishing tackle shop here in Destin. He just got the Kayak a few months ago and is still learning to fish from it. We were on the beach in Navarre. I laid out on the beach while he paddled his kayak around fishing. He caught a few lady fish. Nothing really this trip. But he did see a few Cobia. He is a very good Cobia fisherman. He has caught several this Cobia season. We may get me a kayak too later on. I was going to take a picture of him in the kayak yesterday, but the darn camera battery was dead.

Sadie this morning: She got up at midnight and drank a whole bowl of water and then went out to go pee pee. The limp was not quite as pronounced. But still there. We are up now this morning. She had her breakfast with Pooh Bear. We went outside just to pee and poop. Still limping. You can tell it hurts to stand on it. But she does walk on it, but limps. I've got the spare mattress back out on the living room floor for them to lay around on today and rest. Hubbie will be coming home at lunch to check on them.

M2B,

Sorry to hear about Sadie's limp. If it is a partial ACL tear, the vet will usually wait for it to go completely before operating. Some dogs go for years with a partial tear. Summer tore her first ACL and it finally went a few months later. Two years later, the other ACL tore quickly and completely.

Rule of thumb: If one ACL tears, there is a 50% chance the other will tear with two years.

If surgery is needed, it was about $2500/leg. She will be in a cast for 4 weeks, then rehab. It all takes about three months, depending on the dog.

Let us know how it goes.

5:00 p.m. Friday update. Well, I come home from work and Sadie is much better. Just a hint of a limp. Almost like she waddles slightly with the slight limp. She is wanting to go outside and run but I'm not letting her go running just yet.

Our first Beagle, Sam tore his ACL in one leg when he was about 6 years old. He did the other leg the next year. He had the surgery on both legs each time it happened and he did fine. The first time I had given him a bath and afterwards he was running around the house like a wild banchee. All of a sudden he was holding his back leg way up high and would not put it down. A year later he was just running around in the yard and the other leg had a tore ACL. So we do know about this ailment. And Sadie was not acting the same as Sam. Sam didn't appear to be in any pain really with his ACL tears. Sadie was in extreme pain and limping badly yesterday.

Anyway, for now she is better, except a tiny limp. Keep praying that it was just a fluke injury and nothing major after all.

Thanks all!!

Sounds like good news for Sadie - arrooo!

I'm happy to report Booker also seems to be well on the mend from her sore leg last night as well - she was still sound asleep when I left for work this morning but reports from home later today are that she is walking much better with only a slight limp, and she even ran a little bit on her walk - although she was running to snatch a piece of a sandwich that someone had just dropped and therefore I'm not sure that counts as a real test of how she is - since she definitely has superbeagle strength when food is involved no matter the injury!

Saturday morning report: Yes, I know I report too much, don't I??

Anyway, Sadie is rearing to go this morning as is her usual little self. Something was in the yard again last night so of course they want to go out back and run and sniff and bark. I let them out for a bit but made them come back in as they are barking and it was only 6 a.m. Her limp seems a bit more noticable this morning than last night. When standing still she will hold her foot slightly off the ground.

We have an appt. today with the vet for her yearly shots and they will re-check her leg.

Pooh Bear is doing fine, he goes for his annual shots today too.
