toby has had this problem 3 times now, only in his left eye as well. the inner corner gets swollen. i thought this might be cherry eye but then it goes away after a few hours of sleep.
anyone have any idea what this might be?

I went to google.com and typed in:
dogs cherry eye
I got all kinds of photos similar to that one.

I would have the vet check it, it might be uncomfortable.

Straight to vet, one shouldn't mess about with this. Good luck.

It seems like your beag may have "cherry eye". It will keep popping back out. The best way is to get that 3rd lid steached up surgicaly. There is nothing to it, just one stitch to hole it in and that will be it. The other way is to have it removed, but there is really no need for it.

Good luck

Tobytime: Here is a link to a short explanation of "cherry eye":

Definitely not contagious -- it is not an infection. Maggie had this occur in one eye during a very severe anxiety attack -- happened before our eyes while she was on the table in the vet's office. It was mild and, thankfully, cleared up on its own in about four days and no reoccurences since. Beagles are one of the breeds that are prone to this condition.

dogs do not get Cherry eye, they simply develop it from a malformation of the 3rd eyelid. It is hereditery, so if you have a registered dog, please do inform your breeder.
