Hi, all! Am definitely in a "if it's not one thing, it's another" mode with Maggie ... she has been scooting on the carpet this weekend. Since she no longer has anal glands, I thought the scooting might be from irriation caused by constant diarrhea but this morning, when I examined her, I noticed that her urethra ("pee-pee") is bright red. I am assuming that she has a urinary tract infection (very common in Cushings' dogs). I will take her into the vet tomorrow but does anyone have any home remedies that I might use tonight to make her more comfortable? I have already tried Dr. Smith's Diaper Rash Cream and warm compresses. Thanks!

Poor Maggie! I wish I had some advice for you Judy. Fortunately I haven't had to deal with a UTI with Jersey and Amber rarely got them. All I can do is offer a cyber hug and belly rubs to Miss Maggie. I hope she's feeling better soon.

Judy,

I recently purchased some Dr.Smith's diaper rash creme to add to my doggy-first-aid-kit, since you had mentioned it in a much earlier post. I'm at a loss to give advice (since I definitely consider YOU the resident expert on UTI's!! )

Do you think pain reliever would help or her special anxiety meds? Poor baby....like she needs MORE discomfort. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif

Deb -- glad you got some Dr. Smith's -- CVS told me it is being discontinued. I stocked up (50% off)! Aside from barking at me almost all day, Mags doesn't seem anxious -- she has been eating well today. May try the compresses again as she didn't mind them. She is dripping excessively which just increases the inflammation. Have a project in the office in the morning so won't get to the vet until tomorrow afternoon. Hope the vet has some fast-acting antibiotics!

Does her urine have a weird smell? Have you noticed blood in it? Does she seem like she's straining to pee?

Abby had an inflamed "place" a couple months ago it turned out that she had irritated it squating on something outside.

Jamie: What did you put on the inflamed area? I am pretty sure Maggie has a UTI -- she is peeing frequently but just a little bit each time -- not straining, just not much coming out and lots of dripping. No blood on the urine on the pads from during the night.

There is an OTC doggie cream for itch and irritation that I used. I washed the area with sensitive shampoo and then put the cream on watching her to make sure she didn't lick it off. You could put a diaper on here but air flow to the area should help to heal any irritation faster. I don't know how well topical creams will help if it's a UTI though. Just keep her drinking and peeing.

I feel for Miss Maggie if it is a UTI! I'm prone to them and they make me miserable! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif

What about witch hazel?

Sorry Maggie!

Sadie used to get those a lot before she was fixed. She would have to go Pee very, very often. And when inside she would whine a lot and was very insistant about going outside often. I don't remember her little pee pee area being red though.

Well, after today's vet visit, I think Ms. Maggie must be sneaking out to play with the boys! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif Diagnosis: she has a severe case of vaginitis. One more pill (heavy duty antibiotics) added to the regimen and Betagen spray three times a day. Of more concern was a very high level of protein in her urine. Vet is going to run a protein:creatine ratio test -- high levels being indicative of renal disease.
Maggie was a super good girl at the vet's office -- we had to wait a bit and she kept herself busy checking everyone out. Was distressed during the exam but fine after they were all done scrubbing her tush!

Poor Ms. Maggie! Sympathy vibes coming your way. I just got done with a round of antibiotics for some dental work. I am sure she would agree with me - antibiotics are not fun for for whimps. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif
Upset tummy, things taste funny and the very fun and games - yeast infections! And then the itches still itch. Hope "things" get better and soon. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif
