Yeah, I think it depends on the dog. Henry is a male and extremely affectionate, but at the same time not a lap dog at all. He loves to be rubbed and held, but at the same time he's still very respectful of your personal space and doesn't climb all over you. I have never had a dog so devoted to me either; he follows me everywhere and is so sweet.
