This afternoon a friend and I were out walking and I spotted a man up ahead of us walking a beagle. But his tail was down and he didn't really have a springy beagle step. Eventually we caught up with them, and I oooed and ahhhed and put my hand down to pet him, but he shied away. He looked so nervous, would hardly even look up at me. The man explained that he was a rescue and had been mistreated, and was very timid. I said, "Well bless you for rescuing him." And he said that it's his son's dog, that he was just babysitting. Then he went on to say that he was a Katrina dog! Poor baby, to have gone through Katrina and been abused too??!! He just looked so sad. So here's a gentle hug for you, little guy((( ))), wherever you are. I hope you're able to settle into your new home soon, shed some of your baggage and have a happy beagley life, flying your beagle flag proudly!

Oh, you brought me to tears reading this!

When you were talking about that beagle, you are talking about my Snoopy...walking him with tail between the legs, wont let anyone come near him..that is my baby Snoopy /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif

Now that we are in Cali he is better, head is up when he walks unless he is sniffing, tail up, looks so confident...but anyone comes near.....tail b/t the legs and shakes...ahhhh..if I just knew what happend to him??!! :angryfire:

Anyway, please if you ever see him again, tell him for me how special he is for rescuing the beagle and that it does get better, maybe never normal, but better.

Hi Genie,

Glad that story had a happy ending. In the beginning, I wasn't sure what was going on.

My Henry is a hurricane dog, picked up after the storms as a stray and placed in a pound that has no adoption policy. A small dog rescuer who was pulling dogs from that place just happened to photograph Henry in the pound and put it on the net and somebody sent it to me.

The rest is history but we all think that Henry was very mistreated and abused and probably a failed hunting dog. Being thrown into the shelter after the storms was the best thing that happened to him (and us) cause that helped us find him.

Henry has come a long way since he came to us. I hope that little beagle learns how to be loved and I hope the family loves him and has patience with him.

Thanks for posting that story.

When I 1st got Emma she walked with her tail between her legs. If I scuffed my shoe on the ground she would cower like she was about to be kicked. After she was with me a week or two & got more comfortable I started scuffing my shoe on purpose just to desensitize her. After a year I could run right at her full boar & she would think it was a game.

Poor Baby! I'm so glad he found a new home, it was so very tragic to hear about the animals who lost their homes and families too; It's so beautiful that his new mom/dad reached out to help him. Hugs from Molly and her mom too!
