Poor goober is nearing his final days!

This may be the last time that I can go hunting & have my good
friends next door care for him & homer! Goober is getting much
slower as he is nearly blind & deaf!!! If this is the year that
I lose him...(he has broken every record soo far)...Then he has
been a very big success!!! He knows that I am preparing for
hunting season, but he & Homer have to stay home to guard our
home! If Goober survives this hunting season....He & Homer get to chew more wild game bones!!!

Goober has had a great life but it must be tough for you to watch his decline.

You have been a good dad for Homer and set a great example for many of us. I know Homer has brought you as many good times as you have for him.

Good luck hunting and best of luck to Homer.

It's so hard to watch our senior babes slow down, and to know that our time with them may be coming to an end. My thoughts are with you and Goober.

Re: Poor goober is nearing his final days!

Thanks all! Goober has been our ultimate survivor to live to
nearly 16& 1/2 yrs (next month on the 12th)! But his arthritis
is getting worse despite his treatments. Yesterday morning the
poor ol timer yelped @ the movements I made by getting out of
bed! The tried & true small dose of asprin & an egg & kibble
breakfast revived him enough to play next door after about an
hour, but his left front leg stiffness is an increasing
problem! (He might still have a lifeline or 2 up his sleeve
as he has not had any prostate problems like his younger cousin
Rufus! Rufus is only 12 yrs old & has to take heart meds, while
Goober only gets the same vitamins & supplements that he does!

I'm sorry about Goober, and for you. It's hard to lose a good friend and hunting buddy. Let's hope and pray he gets to have those bones. You are in my thoughts.

Re: Poor goober is nearing his final days!

Goob's, has made some progress this week! I had to give him a
small dose of asprin twice to overcome his front leg pain. He
still has a great appetite...soo, as long as he is hungry he
will greet me & another day!
He was a little fussy
about his food early this week, but when I added some deer meat
trimmings to his kibble he snarfed it down! (Despite his
advanced age), my Great Grandmothers advice about dogs is still
true to this day! A hungry dog is a healthy dog!!!

We hope Goober can survive a while yet. We dont want to lose two of the old beagles in one year. Thinking of you and happy hunting.

Glad to read that Goober is having some better days! It is really a roller coaster with our senior pups, isn't it?

I agree with your grandmother - as long as he's eating, that's the important thing. My heart is with you and Goobs.

Re: Poor goober is nearing his final days!

So glad to hear Goober is eating and I think your Grandmother was right on! My old girl, Cassie, is a lab nearing 13 and we go through the same ups and downs, one day worried that this is the end and the next day she's up and at 'em. And food is always the indicator of how good or bad she is feeling.

I hope Goober continues to enjoy his deer meat for a long time to come! Go Goob!

Has your vet suggested that Goober would benefit from an anti-inflammatory medication like Rimydly? Our first Beagle Sam took that in his last years and it really helped with his arthritis pains.
