She is going to be grumpy /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/mad.gif tonight with no food or snacks...
I'm just glad it's tomorrow, I've been so nervous-since she's a rescue we don't know her age, and I did not want her to go into heat with that nice black lab next door! He might be neutered, though.
poor baby, I know it's for the best. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif

The three things that I kept thinking about and eventually convinced me was how horrible she looked and seemed to feel during her first (and only) heat. I also felt incredibly guilty thinking about possibly bringing more doggies (wanted or not) into the world with all the doggies out there needing to be resuced. Also, our family dog nearly died because my mother never had her spayed and her uterus ended up getting infected later on in life and she had to have emergency surgery to save her.
Glad to hear that Polly is through her spay surgery and on the way to recovery!

One other benefit I have heard of spaying before the first heat is that the risk of breast cancer later in life is reduced significantly (from relatively common down to almost nothing, I believe). I think the risk also goes down quite a bit if the spaying is still early even if after the first heat - and either way it is another thing to think about. And of course cancer and other diseases of the reproductive system that is removed becomes a complete non-issue.
