Has anyone gone through problems with the Pancreas in their Beagles? Pooh Bear had a small amount of blood in his urine and his Pancreas level was slightly elevated a week ago. We had been feeding him and Sadie Ham and roast beef as treats. Our vet told us those are no no's. So I have been very careful about what I give them. Am trying to just give them their dog food and doggie only treats. Pooh Bear has an appt. Friday to be re-checked for this. He got up and threw up Christmas morning and gets up in the night to pee, whereas he didn't used to do that. Thanks all!

Here is a link to an article on pancreatitis:

Also read that the holidays are a common time for dogs to develop symptoms -- lots of yummy, fatty, foods around to taste! You said you are "trying" to give just dog food and doggie only treats. If you want to keep the pups from getting sicker, you need to be really strict about food intake. Lots of dog foods and doggie only treats are high in fat. Look for food and treats that are less than 5% fat content -- you need to start reading labels. If Pooh Bear isn't interested in the new choices, don't give in -- he will eventually realize that there is nothing else coming his way!

We had a dog many years ago (not a beagle) that had reoccuring bouts of pancreas inflammation. It was a long time ago but the vet had us treat each incident by withholding food and limiting water for 24 and then starting back with a very restricted diet. When she was sick the first sign was always a gurgling in her stomach and then vomiting. She couldn't keep anything down. The vet told us this is common in spayed female dogs who have been fed table scraps. I didn't know anything about good dog nutrition back then and there weren't so many quality dog foods available so she got grocery store dog food supplemented with table scraps. More recently we took in a stray cat that was ill. The vet diagnosed her with the same thing but treated it with antibiotics. I don't know if that is a new treatment or just specific to cats. I know the inflammation can be serious if untreated but when we became intentional about how we fed Cindy her attacks became very infrequent. I can't remember exactly what we fed her after an attack but I think it was some plain white rice with a few bits of boiled chicken and gradually adding kibble back in. I also seem to remember we had been feeding once a day but started breaking the quantity into 2 or 3 feedings.

Spook's problem isn't with his pancreas, but treating it is about the same. At first, I gave him boiled chicken breast and rice, then I ground sensitive digestion food to powder and put water on it until it was semi-liquid (nasty stuff!), now I'm soaking his sensitive tummy food for awhile before feeding him. So far, so good.

I feed his twice a day, and the vet said it wouldn't hurt if I broke it down to 3 or 4 times a day. Right now, I don't feel that's necessary.

Jazzy, thanks for asking about Pooh. Yes, he is better now. Although sometimes it is hard to tell how he feels. Sadie and Pooh are both 8 years old (not related). She is much more energetic than he is. He is very laid back and likes to lay around a lot. But, he isn't peeing often anymore, back to normal as far as that goes. I am feeding them just their dry dog food and low fat doggie snacks. For a treat last night I boiled some chicken breasts for them. I encourage him to come outside with Sadie and walk around and sniff, etc. I notice that if I feed him something he should not have he will need to get up in the night to go pee and will drink lots of water. So I am sticking to the orders from the vet. The orders were no pork, ham, bacon, roast beef. They can only have lean chicken or fish if we had to feed them anything but dog food.

I do worry about him because he is so different than Sadie. Sadie likes to get up early and go and sniff and run around the yard. Pooh will sit on the porch and watch her run around. We don't walk them, we have a large back yard for them to play in. But I do put his leash on occasionally and take him for a little walk around the front yard. He does perk up for this and loves it. We don't walk them because Sadie was attacked by a large dog when they were little when we were walking them. We have tried walking them some since the attack but seems like some stray dog or un - leashed dog will come up to us and scares me to death.

Anyway, he is just fine. He is curled up with me now sleeping.

Glad to hear he seems better. I know what you meen about walking them. I carry something called Direct Stop. Its a citronella spray that is supposed to stop most dog attacks. I haven't had to use it so I don't know but I decided its better than nothing.
