Hi, everyone. I have sad news.

We had a pretty serious injury to our beagle tonight.

Elvis isn't big enough to wear the fence collar that we have, so we keep him in a chain link kennel if we're going to be gone somewhere and we have to leave him outside. We've done this for months, since we got him, and it's never been a problem.

Tonight we had to go out for about a half our. He hadn't been outside in a while, so we thought we'd just put him in the kennel until we got back, since we wouldn't be long. Well, he dug under it and got out-- We found this out about half a second before he ran under the front wheel of our van when we were coming home. It was dark and we didn't see him until it was too late. Hubby tried to stop in time and he did slow down significantly (thank god) but he wasn't able to stop.

Needless to say, Elvis is spending the night at the hospital. He has a de-gloving injury on his left back paw, a pretty big one, and several broken bones in his leg (and apparently even missing bone fragments).

No internal injuries. His hip is fine. He only has injuries to the one leg and a small abrasion to one other paw.

His left back leg is pretty shattered, though. Essentially, it was a choice between send him to a specialist an hour away and spend thousands and thousands of dollars for serious orthopedic surgery and physical therapy, or have them do what they could here and end up with a leg that will likely have limited range of motion, but should be able to bear weight without pain. We were forced to chose the latter, as much as we hated to do so. We would love to send him to the specialist, but the money just isn't there, which saddens all of us greatly. It's still a huge bill and there goes Christmas, but whatever. I don't care, nor does hubby or the kid. We just want our puppy.

Our daughter is absolutely crushed. She's been in tears the entire time, basically. She understands what his injuries are and that they're not life-threatening, but it's getting lost in translation from the brain to the heart, and I think she just keeps reliving that moment of running over him (we were all in the van). She's finally asleep, after many tears and fears. She loves that little dog so much. We all do.

Hubby is doing OK. He feels horrible. He knows rationally that it wasn't his fault, but he still feels guilty.

Me? I'm exhausted and mentally and emotionally and financially tapped out now.

The vet thinks he'll be able to come home tomorrow evening or Thursday morning, which I'm sure will lift everyone's spirits, but we have a bit of a long haul ahead of us for recovery.

I'm so sorry to hear you all had to go through this. I will certainly keep you all in my thoughts and prayers. I don't know who I feel worse for..the people or the puppy. I'm sure this has been tough on you all, but in a few days Elvis will hopefully be well on his way to recovery and your daughter will see that all will be okay. Be strong!

Sorry to hear about this. Hopefully he will heal well. Do consider at least getting the opinion of the specialist. I know its funds you may not have, but they may be able to offer better recovery advice and the costs do differ from hospital to hospital.

Do take a look here: Vet Bill resources
You may be able to get funding assistance from one of these groups. Elvis is young, so please explore every option.

As for recovery, regardless of how it is treated, alot will depend on you. He needs to be still and quiet for many weeks, we are talking serious crate rest. The E-collar will need to be kept on. He cannot be allowed to chew his cast. (I know from personal experiences!) Follow the vets instructions. You will need to carry him outside to do his business, then back in the crate. No play. Its hard, but its in his best interests.

Poor little Elvis. I know how much you love him and you all probably feel bad about what happened. He will be okay, as long as you follow the vet's instructions carefully.

Please reconsider the specialist, as Joe said, even his opinion might make a difference. And those vet bills resources might be a great help, too.

Beagle kisses from Chloe and me.

Wow, my breath was just taken away. What a horrible event for you, your hubbie, and your daughter, not to mention Elvis. I am so sorry. If there is anything we can do, please let us know, I mean that. We will be praying for you all. Please check out the Vet Bill Resources places, they were so very helpful and supportive when we had Chipper. If nothing else, they give cyberhugs, too. Please let us know how you are all doing, until then we'll be praying for your family.

I am so very sorry to read about Elvis' accident!! Guess the best news right now is that there were no internal injuries. It sounds like it will be a long recovery, but he will recover. Fingers and paws crossed here that things will go smoothly, and that Elvis will recover quickly. You're all in my thoughts and prayers!

Gosh, I read this and my heart goes out to you all. I am so sorry that this happened, but you could not have foreseen this and you did take all possible precautions. You can only work with what you have in hand. Please just focus on the healing in the family and of Elvis' injuries. Do the best you can for him, nothing more is required of you. Blame and guilt are useless at this point. Take care of yourselves and please let us know how things go and if you need anything. Praying for you all.

Oh dear how terrible!! You must feel dreadful. These things happen, just be grateful Elvis will be o.k. Dont punish yourselves, its love he needs. Let us know how things go, and please take him to a specialist if his leg seems worse.
Thinking of you all.
