I have come to the conclusion that Miss Shiloh is just not very sociable. I have recently joined a group of dog owners in my town that is trying to get a dog park built here. We've had a couple of dog-oriented activities that I've helped at, and the first one I brought Shiloh along to mingle with the other dogs. She was okay with them, sniffed noses and all, (as long as they didn't sniff her butt) but mostly just wanted to be with me, or go off and sniff. Today we took her to a new dog treat bakery that's opened, and there were quite a few dogs there. Again, she touched noses with a few, but mostly didn't pay much attention to the other dogs. It was rather a small shop, and pretty crowded, so my hubby took Shiloh and stood off to one side while I shopped. He said that she mostly ignored the other dogs. He said, She was only interested in one thing in that store, and that you. Awwwww Shiloh seems to like the next door neighbor lab, Holly, and whenever Holly runs over to the yard Shiloh wags and sniffs her nose, then goes back to sniffing the ground. And Holly goes back to running around. She liked Max, the Australian Shepard who lived down the street, and always watched for him. But again, after that first greeting, it was back to sniffing the ground. Several people have mentioned taking their babes to visit other dogs, and how much they enjoy playing together. So is Shiloh just antisocial? Did I not socialize her enough as a puppy? She did grow up with 2 other dogs in our family, but our standard poodle Coco, who was her best friend, has been gone now for many years, and she and our other poodle, Misty, enjoyed a hate-hate relationship till the day Misty died! Does anybody else's beag react this way to other dogs?

Duke and Violet are very friendly toward other dogs, but before Violet, when I took Duke to the park alone, he would sometimes spend most of his time following me or sniffing around and not interacting a lot. But there were times he was all over the other dogs, depended on his mood, I guess.

I think Shiloh just loves her mommy so much, she wants to spend all her time with you. Also, her age may have something to do with it, since she probably isn't as in to running around as when she was younger.

Our dogs do like their play dates, but the boys Sam and Tate are content to go off on their own all the time and leave the girls to play with whatever dog is visiting. I think it really just depends on the dog and has nothing to do with how much you socialized. Now if she was aggressive towards the others I would say it was a socialization issue, but not if she just isn't real interested in playing with them.

Li'l Girl does fine with her siblings, but isn't keen on other dogs. Even at home, she goes off and does her own thing and doesn't hang around with the other guys. Of course, living where we do, she doesn't really get a chance to meet other dogs. When she sees one, however, her reaction isn't friendly. It seems she's just a homebody who's happy sniffing on her own. When she's in the house, she usually wants to be close to me.

Our two hate other dogs. They do allow beagles to visit though. We dont want to force them to make friends so have to put up with the barking when out walking.

Bones is a friend to all living creatures, but Spock is only a people dog. Bones and our former roommate's dog Morty are the only dogs he's been around very much. He dislikes going to the dog park, gets scared of other dogs, and spends his time either begging other people for attention (or food, when someone ignores the rules and brings something to eat), sniffing, or looking for a way out of the park. I have pretty much given up on taking him there, since it's 25 minutes there and back of both him and Bones whining in the back seat, only to have him not enjoy himself at all.

Jersey gets along with other dogs and is friendly with them, sniffs them and gets along fine with them but rarely shows anything other than a passing interest. When she was a puppy and we'd go to the dog park she'd play with any dog for hours on end. Now, she couldn't care less. That change started after I began taking her to day care. She won't truly play with another dog outside of her day care crowd. She's become a bit of a snob. Most times she's more interested in meeting the human than the dog attached to it.

I wouldn't worry about it - I would view it as a great thing! You have a dog that doesn't see much value in other people or dogs, but sees a high value in being with you.

My beagle is excited when she sees other dogs but when we go to the dog park she is a bit of a 'nigel no friends' and likes to go off on her own and scent. I wish she was more owner orientated! I will seriously considering teaching neutralisation next time I get a pup so they are more focused on being with me rather than other people or dogs.

Cobi is definitely not a very socialable dog with others dogs either. He will sniff and act like a big shot, but as far as playing, he has no time for it. Casie, is afraid of other dogs and some people. So we are working on just getting him to be around others. They get along fabulously with each other.

If you are going to be taking her out a lot, then it might be a good thing that she can at least be among the others, but as far as friendly, I'm with the idea that she cares about you, and not everyone else.

A dog can still be sociable and friendly with other dogs without needing to play with them. My bitch enjoys the company of other dogs, and is very polite and well socialised but is not overly fussed with playing. Unless the dog is exhibiting dominance or aggression, or any other negative behaviour towards other dogs, I wouldn't be too concerned.

Our pack seems to enjoy the company of other dogs (and each other) for the most part, but when we go to the off leash park usually it is only Moosie who will actually play with the other dogs (although that is stretching it a bit - his playing consists of stealing their balls and then running away off by himself). Booker might go off to sniff by herself, or go and make some new people friends (preferably new people friends who have food...), but usually both Booker and Popcorn end up sitting with us on the bench rather than socializing with the other dogs. Popcorn used to run around with the other dogs (she loves running), but lately she seems to have lost some of her confidence and stays more at our heels. Not sure what Buzz will be like since we can't take him off leash yet - but I do know his tail goes a mile a minute whenever he sees another dog on our walks!

Some dogs just don't like other dogs. I've socialized Menolly as much as is possible, but she seems to be kind of standoffish with other dogs so far. Unfortunately she hasn't met that many dogs yet because no other dogs are out when we are and there ar eno dog parks here. She loves the big shepherd mix that lives behind us. She wags her tail like crazy and eagerly sniffs him. Big dogs she seems to like better than smaller dogs. I'll have to wait until she's met more dogs to really make a judgement on it, though.

I think it's also partly down to age. The older my dogs have got the more they just want to do their own thing and sniff about rather than interact with other dogs. Sherry is much more sociable than Rosa but Sherry was brought up in kennels with many other dogs and that is all she has ever known. Rosa is friendly but aloof and doesn't play with other dogs anymore but did when she was a pup.

If I was to go into a store and leave either dog outside with my hubby they would both sit and cry until I returned.

Eve, going to a dog park is what got me thinking about this subject. If and when our proposed dog park ever gets built (questionable in this economy) I'd like for Shiloh to enjoy a place where she can run around off leash. But if she doesn't, at least I wouldn't be driving 25 minutes to get there!!
