Hi, all! For those who are new, Maggie has Cushings (increased cortisol)and atypical Cushings (increase in all other hormones). Because of the likelihood of liver cancer, we (vet, IMs and me) opted to have a melatonin implant inserted. The implant lasts for about 4 months and two weeks ago the vet sent blood up to Univ. Tennessee to be analyzed. Over the last 4 months Maggie's Cushings' symptoms have increased greatly and we were not too optimistic about the effect of the implant. Sure enough, the results are back and, not only have there been no positive changes, her cortisol level has increased quite a bit.
So ... we are left with two decisions. One, continue as we are and let things progress or start her on Lysodren, a chemotherapy-like drug used to treat Cushings and hope it alleviates some of her symptoms or at least slows down the disease (there is no cure). There are problems with giving Maggie Lysodren both in terms of dosing and side effects. I change my mind several times a day. On good days, i.e., no diarrhea, reduced skin inflammation, eating something, I think "let's just do what we're doing". On bad days, I think we should give it a try. I just don't want to make her sicker, trying to make her better. My dilemma to figure out but thanks for "listening"!
