Hi, all! For those who are new, Maggie has Cushings (increased cortisol)and atypical Cushings (increase in all other hormones). Because of the likelihood of liver cancer, we (vet, IMs and me) opted to have a melatonin implant inserted. The implant lasts for about 4 months and two weeks ago the vet sent blood up to Univ. Tennessee to be analyzed. Over the last 4 months Maggie's Cushings' symptoms have increased greatly and we were not too optimistic about the effect of the implant. Sure enough, the results are back and, not only have there been no positive changes, her cortisol level has increased quite a bit.
So ... we are left with two decisions. One, continue as we are and let things progress or start her on Lysodren, a chemotherapy-like drug used to treat Cushings and hope it alleviates some of her symptoms or at least slows down the disease (there is no cure). There are problems with giving Maggie Lysodren both in terms of dosing and side effects. I change my mind several times a day. On good days, i.e., no diarrhea, reduced skin inflammation, eating something, I think "let's just do what we're doing". On bad days, I think we should give it a try. I just don't want to make her sicker, trying to make her better. My dilemma to figure out but thanks for "listening"!

I know how hard it is to make these decisions. I'm still debating about the Reconcile (prozac) for Jersey's separation anxiety. Amber was on Lysodrene and did have some good results on it. I talked not only to my vet, but also to my pharmacist about the potential side effects. He was able to give me much better advice in that area than the vet could.

Judy,

Sorry to hear that Maggie is not responding well to treatment. That is usually when you need to try something else. You sais the Lysodren is a chemo drug. Find out how well dogs tolerate it. Murphy is on Leukeran, a chemo drug. He tolerates it very well. We were very concerned, like you about using it. Our vet keeps a close eye on his CBC counts, and ajusts his dosage accordingly.

As for the decision, trust your instincts, trust your vet. Its about keeping Maggie pain free and happy.

Keep us updated.

Aw-www, Judy, I'm so sorry to read Maggie's latest results. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif You're a great beagle mom, and I know you'll do what's best although it's a difficult decision. You remain in my prayers.
