oh yes, I hope she does not need her collar! Georgia never messed with her stitches...
though my oldest son, when he was 2 years old, he pulled out his own stitches--out of his eyebrow. and we thought he would be a doctor. :rotflmao:

sorry, I digress--I'm glad Maggie's doing well--ear scratches all around!

Just wondering if Maggie (or any other beagles who have had anal gland removal surgery) experienced the unfortunate post-surgical problem of the odd poop sort of "slipping" out unexpectedly?

Moose had his anal glands removed in November 2005 (after a couple of years of repeat infections) and he seemed to go right back to pooping normally right after the surgery.

Booker just had her anal glands removed last Wednesday. Although she wasn't getting infections like Moosie they were getting more and more difficult (and painful) to express and needed to be done more and more frequently (even every two weeks was getting a bit too long), so the vet suggested we get them removed - given that she had to have surgery to remove a lump from her belly anyway.

The surgery went really well and Booker is looking and apparently feeling great (they removed three lumps in all plus the two glands - I think she must have even lost a bit of weight as a result!) but there have been a couple of instances when a (thankfully little and hard) poop just sort of comes shooting out without her even really seeming to know it is happening. A couple of times it has happened while we are out walking, and a couple of times it has happened when she has just been lying or sitting around.

The vet says that some minor fecal incontinence is perfectly normal for a couple of weeks after the surgery given that everything is a bit raw, swollen and sensitive "back there" - and doesn't mean that there is going to be any permanent problem... but given that permanent damage has been my biggest fear about both Moose and Booker having the surgery I think I would just feel better knowing first-hand that other beagles had a few relatively minor problems like that soon after their surgery but eventually got back to normal.

Maggie didn't have this exact problem post-surgery but her bowel movements were definitely not normal. She would be constipated for three days or so and then have very loose bowels for a few days. This continued for about three weeks after surgery. Everything is now back to normal, poop-wise. My vet and I did discuss the possibility of fecal incontinence prior to surgery but we both felt it was a medically necessary surgery in spite of possible risks. I was so glad when Maggie had her first poop a couple of hours after surgery that I didn't care what the consistency was!
Give Booker some time -- can't imagine how wierd it must be to have surgery in that delicate area. Keep us updated.
