Don't know if there is a science behind it... but I can partially support your theory: Chloe has green eyes, and her pal Abby (tri-color) has dark brown eyes...

My Maggie has exceptionally dark eyes so I would have to go with the genetic theory. You can see her eyes in my avatar but this pic shows them better:
