Last night Menolly was acting really wound up. We went to bed as usual, but she wouldn't settle down. First she started sniffing the entire bed a mile a minute, as if there was something there. Then she started licking my arm like crazy. That tickled, but eventualy I tried pushing her away. She grabed my arm with her paws and wouldn't let go. I corrected her, but she moved on to the other arm. Same thing. I groaned and hid both arms from her. She started digging in the covers and trying to get at my face to lick. I told her to cut it out. She did.

Then the bed started wiggling. I saw a shadow move and out of suspicion I turned on the light.

Menolly was humping my leg!
I kid you not! I scolded her and waited until she calmed down and curled up to sleep before I settled in myself.

Now, I've heard of female mounting a male during mating, but why the heck would a FEMALE dog start humping anything??? Is this normal, or does she have some gender confusion issues? She's still in heat, but that was just...wrong.

My female mounts all of us
She does it to my leg and when the kids are on the floor playing she does it to them as well. Anyone else?

Though none of mine mount humans, Cassie would occasionally do it to Roscoe and I've seen Violet mount Duke once or twice. They are both spayed, so I think it's normal. As long as it doesn't happen often.

As for the licky, restless, sniffing issue, read the post from a few months back by Crazy Daisy (Update on Daisy's Unknown Health condition....posted on 11/21/08...on page 7 of this forum right now). It's regarding Daisy having episodes where she licks and sniffs and eats grass. Violet has had a few of the same episodes, as well as Deb's Maggie. Erin posted links to videos, see if Menolly's behavior mimicks any of Daisy's.

When I first got Daisy, (an adult rescue), she would hump the occasional visitor and my older dog. She doesn't do it to people anymore, but she humps my 7 month old dog Lola almost daily, and will also hump visiting dogs. It's definitely a dominance thing with her. She will stop when I tell her to.

I have a smallish table in front of my picture window, which is where Daisy hangs out when I am gone. I crate Lola. If I'm only gone for a short time, I don't put Lola in the crate and they both hang out on the table watching the world. A few weeks ago, I ran to the store. When I pulled back in the driveway, there in the window I see Daisy earnestly humping away on Lola. It was hysterical! Doggie Porn! I wonder if anyone else drove by and saw the show?!!

She's horny. It is most likely hormonal. She is probably at the receptive stage and no one is giving her what she wants so she is trying to help herself. I know that sounds gross, but honestly all of our intact females around here do that. Since we use Tate as a stud in our community, we have a lot of females here in heat all the time. We will have two visiting this coming week. They all seem to do it.

Is there a reason you have not had Menolly spayed? Are you planning to breed her? I think if you wait too long she may develop this behavior and continue it.

Thankfully our dogs do not do this to humans and when they do get caught in the act it is obviously a sign of dominance or someone is in heat and hormones are strong. I don't know what would happen should we have them spayed now.

My Daisy has humped my leg twice. We have had her almost a yr and a half and she just did it for the first time a month or so ago. I was playing with her with my foot and all of the sudden she just latched on with her front legs and started humping. I corrected her and it's only happened once since then to me, but I couldn't help but laugh. I was kind of funny. She hasn't done it since and has never done it to anyone else.

My Beagle does it too!

Lady is about 12 months old and has been spayed for 6 months now. Every so often she starts humping the blanket. Thankfully, she hasn't humped us. The blanket she humps is not hers. It belongs to our senior labrador. We are distressed that she still humps after being spayed. I don't think my children are old enough to be seeing her do that. It makes me very uncomfortable. And it's definitely not Lady-like. We were afraid that perhaps the spay didn't take. We tell her NO! NO, Lady!!! Should I call the vet? Or just correct the behavior when it occurs.

It's perfectly fine. Just call her and give her something else to do. It has nothing to do with sex. Just a dog behavior.

My Feist sometimes does that arm licking thing at night. The 2 dogs I have right now aren't humpers, but I've done foster and rescue for years and so MANY of them were. Spayed female dogs will hump, neutered males will hump, etc. It is a dominance thing and doesn't have anything to do with them mating. When they hump a person or other animal, they are trying to establish dominance. It is more common in alpha dogs of either sex, and is not related to heat cycles, etc.

I have rescued and fostered dogs for many years. (various breeds and mixes.) Always had everyone neutered and spayed by 6 months. I have had many spayed females and neutered males humping . The humping is a dominance thing, and doesn't have anything to do with mating. It is more common with alpha dogs of both sexes. They do it to establish that they are "in charge." I have seen puppies as young as 3 or 4 months humping, and as I said older sterilized dogs doing it. It goes back to their wild ancestory. In the wolf packs the omega is humped to humiliate him and show that he is low man on the pack totem pole.

ever time I post on this thread it doesn't show up. I'll try one more time. It's a dominance thing. More common in alpha dogs. They do it to establish that they are in charge. Both male and female spayed and neutered dogs will do it, as well as puppies way to young to be in season..
