I am a total rooky, all I know about dogs and Beagles I have learned in the last 8 weeks by reading most everything I could get my hands on. Our family just adopted a dog from our local district animal control. The dog was born of a pregnant Beagle that was surrendered to animal control. (No story as to why) Our friend, a local vet, took the dog home and helped her through the birth and raised the four pups to 8 weeks. Our pup is now 8 weeks and 4 days. The “mom” is very typical Beagle in all respects (size, color, shape). The dad is unknown, although we do know that two adult male Beagle’s were surrendered along with the pregnant female. Three of the four pups look typical with tricolor markings. The pup we adopted is black with tan accents on the face and feet. She looks like a Rottweiler. I was assuming odds were she was a Beagle. (Note that my interest in “the answer” has more to do with curiosity than anything else. . .we are keeping her no matter what and were not looking for a Beagle, just a good dog. . . and so far she is PERFECT) I was fairly sure that she was all Beagle based on the markings of the three other pups, the “mom” and the story of the males. Today, to help plan the food portions, I weighed her and was surprised by her weight. Her body shape is good, she is lean but not too thin. She weighed 11lbs. The growth charts I found online indicate that this is about 2x what an 8 week old Beagle would likely weigh! Your thoughts?
