I am a total rooky, all I know about dogs and Beagles I have learned in the last 8 weeks by reading most everything I could get my hands on. Our family just adopted a dog from our local district animal control. The dog was born of a pregnant Beagle that was surrendered to animal control. (No story as to why) Our friend, a local vet, took the dog home and helped her through the birth and raised the four pups to 8 weeks. Our pup is now 8 weeks and 4 days. The “mom” is very typical Beagle in all respects (size, color, shape). The dad is unknown, although we do know that two adult male Beagle’s were surrendered along with the pregnant female. Three of the four pups look typical with tricolor markings. The pup we adopted is black with tan accents on the face and feet. She looks like a Rottweiler. I was assuming odds were she was a Beagle. (Note that my interest in “the answer” has more to do with curiosity than anything else. . .we are keeping her no matter what and were not looking for a Beagle, just a good dog. . . and so far she is PERFECT) I was fairly sure that she was all Beagle based on the markings of the three other pups, the “mom” and the story of the males. Today, to help plan the food portions, I weighed her and was surprised by her weight. Her body shape is good, she is lean but not too thin. She weighed 11lbs. The growth charts I found online indicate that this is about 2x what an 8 week old Beagle would likely weigh! Your thoughts?

that's what I see. . . the 5# range seems to be about average at 8 weeks and so I am thinking that odds are that I don't have the worlds largest Beagle, but a mix . . . It will be fun to watch her grow no matter what. . .

If it's not important what she is, but a good dog...that may have to be good enough. Our first beagle came from a lady that said and advertised beagles for give away...the mother was a beagle, we saw her. The other pups looked like beagles at 8 weeks...and Chipper definitely looked like a beagle puppy. He was the tiniest, so we didn't know what size he would turnout to be.
As he got older, and bigger, we noticed longer ears, a stouter body with more muscle mass, and shorter legs. hmmmm. This didn't look like a beagle. But he was such a gentle soul, very good, well trained, and eager to please and to love, to mind and to give love. Who cared? We finally saw a purebred Bassett, and compared the two...talked to a person who lived down the street from the breeder (said tongue in cheek) and she had a basset male that she says could be he father...so we changed his breed to a Bagel and were so pleased with our choice. He may have been the runt, but he turned out to be quite a big boy for a beagle. The vet said he weighed almost 32 lbs when we had to put him down. He started out at about 5 lbs when we got him at 8 weeks, also.

Love her, train her, and that's the important things.

Can't wait to see pictures!! Where do you live by chance? The only reason I ask is because there was a pregnant beagle brought it with at least one other dog to one of shelter/rescue groups. Thought maybe you lived nearby!

What part of CT are you from? Those pups are incredibly cute, they appear to be beagle, I am no expert though, There is the traditional tri color of coat with beagles but then there are some that are darker and have more black in their coat.

Thanks for all the input and complements. She is a great dog! I will post an update in a week or two with size/weight update. . . Her size seems to be the only “out of breed” trait at the moment.

Webbed Feet? So how uncommon is it to have a Beagle with webbed feet? My quick research indicates that some people say their Beagle has webbed feet, but I have never seen this listed as a breed trait in any reliable source. Coco's feet are webbed. We spend the summers on the water. She will be a good swimmer!
