Our cat Poe has been confined to the house for the last couple of months, and other varmits are beginning to invade his territory.
(The fact that Poe considers the entire neighborhood and everything in it his territory that has to be marked appropriately is why he's under house arrest, but that's another story.) Anyway, now everytime we go out, Shiloh is sniffing and tracking these other animals--one
in particular--who have been trying to move in on Poe's turf. I was watching her today, sniffing and arrooing, with the fur between her shoulders standing on end, and I was so happy, though neighbors probably not so much.
But she was having fun, doing her little job, and it was fun to watch.
By the way, do others' beags raise the fur in between their shoulder blades when they're hunting? We call it her mohawk--I guess that is what is meant by raising her hackles?

Mine will raise their hackles when they play sometimes, even their tails will poof up a little bit. But mostly Daisy does it with my parents' female lab (Lexi) when she's trying to boss Lexi around.

Arty does raise his hackles when he's in attack mode (like the time he thought a strange guy was trying to sneak up on me). It is kinda scary to see all his hackles up bc its like.. whoa, i did NOT expect that to be there.. but he has never raised it at me or the rest of the family, even when he's mad.
