Lucky starts his intermediate training class tonight. Let's hope he is the star of the class again like in beginner training! I am nervous because they put us in the big sized dog class when last time we were in the medium sized dog class. I also hope we have a small class. I am really nervous and excited for Lucky. He sure does love class and is such a teacher's pet. I hope he does well!!! :hyper:

Go, Lucky, go!!! :happyhappy:

I'm sure Lucky will do extremely well once again. After all, he has a big dog's heart in his little dog's body /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

We had a bad first class. We are in the big dogs class and those dogs are huge. They are all still puppies as well (all under 1 year old). Lucky is the oldest and smallest. Every other dogs outweighs him by at least twice Lucky's weight. We had play time before class started and those mean big dogs chased Lucky in the corner. He refused to move and do the commands because that meant he had to come near the big dogs. He was frightened. He was shaking. I felt so bad. I don't know whether to move him to the medium dog class of keep trying this class since he needs to learn to do the commands despite distractions. Please help!

Has Lucky ever been around big dogs? Brandy and Cecil love big dogs and always go to them. I think it is because of our neighbor's greyhound and because we take them in the big dog side of the dog park. Big dog puppies are like our little beagle puppies in play, they just don't know how big they are. If you show concern so will your beagle...if it makes you feel better then by all means, put him in a smaller dog class. I just wish Brandy and Cecil would make it thru a training class. They do all the right things, but don't get the homework they need. I find it difficult with two the same age. Anyway...go Lucky! And maybe taking Lucky to the big dog side of a dog park will help get him used to big dogs.

See that's what I don't understand. My brother has a greyhound/collie mix and a lab puppy. He plays with them all the time no problem. He also loves playing with the big dogs at the dog park. I don't understand why he fears the dogs in class. It's the great dane he fears, which is weird. The shelter he came from, the lady who owns it used to run it out of her home. She owns great danes and he used to see them all the time. Of course, he was a lot younger then. But he usually loves to play with big dogs. Maybe it is the tiny confined space they are in when in class. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif

Maybe it is; however, Brandy and Cecil have caution with Great Danes. We have one on our street, Romeo. He is beautiful and a little over 2 years old. We have been trying for a year for them to socialize, but to no avail. When he is playful, his legs and paws are so big, it scares the girls. Also when he barks it's huge and the girls shy from that. Maybe if the owner of the Great Dane would hold him close and "in check" and let Lucky sniff him and be able to walk over to him without big reaction that might help. We have not succeeded at that as the owner of Romeo can't seem to hold him close and still.

Has your trainer offered any suggestions or help? Mine worked really hard to get all the dogs socialized to each other. One dog was really aggressive with the others and the trainer brought in a behavior specialist who sat with that dog and the owner for two classes and helped them with techniques for working with him. I know I am reading this post late but I might suggest giving it one more chance and arriving early. That way your dog can get used to the others one by one as they arrive.

My trainer has been so wonderful. We tried to get into another class, but there were none available. So we decided to give the big dog class another try. We are going to try to introduce Lucky to the Great Dane. Then we are going to keep the Great Dane on the other side of the room away from Lucky. Hopefully, Lucky will just get used to these big dogs. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

It sounds like a good plan. I hope it works out, and Lucky gets used to the new class!
