I Loved You Best

So this is where we part, My Friend,
and you'll run on, around the bend,
gone from sight, but not from mind,
new pleasures there you'll surely find.

I will go on, I'll find the strength,
life measures quality, not its length.
One long embrace before you leave,
share one last look, before I grieve.

There are others, that much is true,
but they be they, and they aren't you.
And I, fair, impartial, or so I thought,
will remember well all you've taught.

Your place I'll hold, you will be missed,
the fur I stroked, the nose I kissed.
And as you journey to your final rest,
take with you this....I loved you best.

Sandy,

The picture is wonderful, the tribute beautiful and the poem brought a tear.....I'm sending it to my friend who is grieving over a recent loss.

Thank you.....

I could not have said it better about Snapper! He was a "little guy" like Rufus that is now 11 years old! Both were/(Rufus is still a very active "mini-beag") But Pop has the benefit of knowing Rufus's age as being exactly one year old when he adopted him in 1997. So Rufus got to spend about 3 yrs with Duke before he died. The "rotten luck" of that was that Duke died 3 days before Pop,s birthday! He still misses Duke terribly, but Nibbler, (that he adopted in 2001)..."has nearly the same loving personality" as Duke did!(And he becomes more like Duke was every day! Nibbler was born in 2000 & is very protective of Rufus...As Homer is with Goober  But, the good things the breed has to offer has very much outperformed the negative things about the breed of beagles! "I'll keep one or 2 as company until I,m too old to know " (where I am)!

Sandy,

I understand completely how the Holidays conjure up memories of the ones we loved so much.

This was my first Christmas without Olivia in 16 years. I'm still in the "painful" stage of missing her. But every year, when we pull out decorations, we find Jake's (beagle mix) and Ginger's (our golden) Christmas stocking. There are pictures of them around the house and Casey knows them as if he met them so we happily relive stories about them with him.

Shadow even looks like my Jake, except Jake's ears were crooked and pointy. So I know that Shadow was extra, extra special. It's comforting to be able to remember them with laughter instead of sadness, isn't it.?

An anecdote regarding my Shadow. Sometimes, the most precious gifts are the simple ones that come from the heart. A Christmas or two after Shadow died, my husband gave me this....

it's a nearly identical replica of my beloved boy. Dusty had bought the little figurine and then painted it using a picture to get exact coloring. Yes, I cried when I opened it.
