I was reading in Bernie Beagle's thread that many of you give your Beagles 1 cup of food a day. Ah, Georgia gets 1/3 cup dry morning and night...
am I starving her? she doesn't look starved...
We give the puppy 1/2 cup morning and night, plus an extra serving every day or so...

Jersey gets about 3/4 of a cup twice a day. As a puppy she got three servings a day. I fed her according to the feeding instructions on the food as well as my vets recommendations. The vet actually recommended more than the bag so I went in the middle. A lot depends on the activity level as well. Jersey gets more food on the days that she's at Day Care than on the days we sit home all day (like today).

What ever your vet suggests, should be the S.O.P.

Vinny (2years old, 29 pounds) gets 1/2 cup dry 2times per day. The evening meal gets 1 tablespoon of canned chicken/rice/gravy mix.

If your Beag has good energy through out the day then you are probably good to go with your current intake amount.

Maggie and Cal are currently on Purina One Lamb and rice or chicken and rice.
Maggie is 13 inches and 19 pounds. I feed her one cup per day
Calvin is a shepherd mix at about 45 pounds. I feed him 2 cups a day.

Both are trim, and rarely get store bought treats because they had a lot of gas and tummy problems with most things. I have increased their fiber with carrots, apples, green beans and pumpkin, but that's all.

Hope that helps. Sounds like Georgia is doing fine though!

Our vet has always told us that we really have to go by whether the dog is maintaining a good weight at the amount we are feeding - and if they are gaining cut back a bit. We find with both Booker and Moose if we even go to a heaping cup they start to creep up. We tend not to have the feeding too little problem - I'm not sure how you find out if you are feeding too little, though, because who has ever met a beagle that isn't hungry?! But again, if they are maintaining a good weight and have lots of energy I would think they are probably getting enough food.

Taurus Mom, Our daddy only feeds each of us 3/4 cup of food twice a day. We are trying to get that nice lady at the vet to tell daddy we need 2 cups of food six times a day. chloe, ginger and bailey. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

3/4 cup to 1 cup of a good quality food is the usual for a Beagle adult.

Beagles should eat 3 X day until 6 months of age, twice a day from 6 months to a year, and once a day after a year.
Puppies eat more than adult. approximately 1/2 cups 3 times a day and 3/4 cup twice a day.
Adults can be fed twice a day, especially for those vaccum eaters. The daily proportion should then be divided in 2.

Also to remember, a 6 months old pup should be switched to adult food in order to allow puppy to develop slowly, which is then achieved by reducing the protein intake.

Definitely. I will never forget the day we found Noli inside the 37lb bag of puppy food she had dragged from the kitchen table and basically emptied. That evening, she could not understand why we refused to feed her!

Hmmm, I feed the Bagel by watching his weight, cutting back if he is putting on pounds, adding a little if he is looking lean. In reality his weight doesn't change and he has never gained or lost over half a pound in 8 years, I can just tell if he needs more or less. He is an active 11/13 year old beagle and he gets between 1 cup and 2 cups depending on the time of year and his activity. He currently gets about a cup and a half and that is typical except for the very hot August when he lies around and stays cool.

Hi,

I am working on getting my beagles at a lighter weight especially since Kylie has the back issue now. She's lost about 2 pounds already. She weighted 31.5 pounds and I know she's lighter from picking her up..or am I getting stronger? <G>

I use to feed them (I have a beagle/lab mix. She looks like a baby yellow lab)3/4 cup 2x's a day. Now I've cut down to 1/2 cup 2 x's a day.
I'm working on cutting down treats. Hubby is the worst but I know we both know it's the best for them to be at a good weight.

They are very active. (Were for Kylie)
