Has anyone ever had their beagle diagnosed with Hip Dysplasia (HD)?
After Marley's Mommy's comment in another thread about the way Sally was sitting, we decided to investigate it further. She has some other symptons (like the sitting and gait legs) but doesn't seem to be showing signs of pain or discomfort or lameness in her back legs.
Just to be safe, we've booked her into a vet tomorrow night to have her assessed for HD. This vet is also an animal chiropractor and has an x-ray machine if they are needed. HOPEFULLY (!) he will be able to say yes or no when assessing her in the consult and we won't need to proceed to the x-rays. I'm really hoping he'll just say she's a lazy sitter and that's why she does the splits when she's sitting.
If it's confirmed to be HD, it means there could be a good chance that Leia has it also seeming they are sisters from the same litter.
The reason we've decided to investigate the possibility is because we've been taking them on long beach walks most weekends and I'm concerned that this might be doing them more damage than good if there is a concern with HD. Plus, if an operation is needed, there's proven research to say that animals have a better life if the operation is done prior to 12 months of age. After 12 months, I'm pretty sure there's 2 operations needed, rather than just one.
So, I'd like everyone to cross their fingers and hope that Sally is all okay and there are no signs of HD.
This poor little girl is only 10 months old and has been under anaesthetic twice already, I'm really hoping we don't have to do it for a 3rd time!
