Has anyone ever had their beagle diagnosed with Hip Dysplasia (HD)?

After Marley's Mommy's comment in another thread about the way Sally was sitting, we decided to investigate it further. She has some other symptons (like the sitting and gait legs) but doesn't seem to be showing signs of pain or discomfort or lameness in her back legs.

Just to be safe, we've booked her into a vet tomorrow night to have her assessed for HD. This vet is also an animal chiropractor and has an x-ray machine if they are needed. HOPEFULLY (!) he will be able to say yes or no when assessing her in the consult and we won't need to proceed to the x-rays. I'm really hoping he'll just say she's a lazy sitter and that's why she does the splits when she's sitting.

If it's confirmed to be HD, it means there could be a good chance that Leia has it also seeming they are sisters from the same litter.

The reason we've decided to investigate the possibility is because we've been taking them on long beach walks most weekends and I'm concerned that this might be doing them more damage than good if there is a concern with HD. Plus, if an operation is needed, there's proven research to say that animals have a better life if the operation is done prior to 12 months of age. After 12 months, I'm pretty sure there's 2 operations needed, rather than just one.

So, I'd like everyone to cross their fingers and hope that Sally is all okay and there are no signs of HD.

This poor little girl is only 10 months old and has been under anaesthetic twice already, I'm really hoping we don't have to do it for a 3rd time!

Marley's mommy - I've had lots of people comment to me that their rotti's and labradors sit like that and have a perfect hip score of 0:0 or 1:3 and are fine.

Poor breeding is my concern, we did buy our girls from BYB's and that's why I'm going to get it all checked out.

I'd rather have it checked out for peace of mind, than keep worrying about it, wondering if there is anything wrong. If there is, we can start to fix it. If there's not, we can continue our long walks along the beach /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

Only another 3 hours till we'll know.

Well, good news is, both of them have no signs of HD.

The vet said that Sally's stivells(sp?) are a bit loose, but that's about it.

He told us to correct them when they sit so they are sitting correctly and not having their legs slide out or sitting with them to the side.

So! Good outcome /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

Stivell, stifle.. Something like that, it's a muscle in their back leg that the vet said was "loose". But with her sitting properly and growing, it should tighten up.

Jen - Hell yes! We have a beagle club walk on the 7th October, so watch out for photos from that /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Madison - No, not the fragle. This is when they actually sit, the legs slide out and it looks like they are doing the splits. Like this photo:

Her legs are slipping out to the side.

Marley's Mommy - I hope Marley has a good diagnosis like Sally and Leia!

It's such a relief to know that nothing is wrong, I was really starting to worry about what kind of life they'd have and what the effects of it were. But, don't need to worry.. yet!
