I'm hoping someone can help me sort out the differance between normal puppy behavior for a nine week old female and agressive behavior. I recently got Zoey as a companion for my Borador (Lab/Border Collie mix) Katey. Katey is 10 years old and the most gentle and intelligent dog i've ever had. I chose a beagle for her because her last playmate was a red and white beagle that she absolutely adored. He passed on about 3 yrs ago and until recently i have'nt had the means or space to keep a second dog.
The first nite i had Zoey things went very well. Katey was even tossing the ball to her just as she did with her last bud. Then the next morning Zoey seemingly attacked her for no apparent reason. I chalked it off as Zoey just playing a lil rougher than Katey was used to but she trys to bite her constantly. I've tryed distracting her with playtoys but to no avail. When i try to restrain her she just won't give up till I seperate them.Just today she locked onto Kateys tail and now they are permanetely seperated. Shes starting to understand the word "NO" and i can see a slow response is starting to develop there.
Did I introduce her to early? Is this to be expected from such a young dog and my hopes of peace are to high? BTW I will be seeking the assistance of a professional trainer before the end of the week I'm just hoping i can get some insite or at least have my mind put at ease for the time being. Thank You

I honestly think it is normal puppy playing. Puppies play like that, they bite and until they are taught not to do so, they don't know any better. I would not keep them separated unless if the pup is really annoying the older dog. Pups are high energy and always on the go (until they pass out from exhaustion). Katey will likely correct her if sh ebites too hard, that's how dogs teach each other. I will log onto my other computer and show you a picture of Sydney as a pup. I really don't think that they know what agression is at that age, they really just want to play.

I agree, Daisy was really rough with our cat when we first got her. She has since learned "No" and "Be Nice" and they play well together, but the cat definitely lets her know when she crosses the line.

I think it's normal. She is only 9 weeks old and I doubt she can hurt Katey or that this is her intent.

Ya, makes me laugh to think about it too, they still play rough to this day and she still puts the boots to Spencer.

Duke is like that with our older labs. Well, he tried to be like that with Cassie, but she put him in his place fast. Now Roscoe is blind, so it's a bit harder for him to fight back, that's when we step in. But Duke will still annoy Roscoe all the time. Funny thing is that in all Roscoe's 13 years, he had only barked maybe 10 times (vet said he could bark, just never had a reason). Well, since we got Duke, Roscoe barks at him all the time! Our friends are amazed when they come over because they never heard him make a sound before Duke.

Sometimes Roscoe is enjoying the play and we just let it go, but the times when he is annoyed, we tell Duke no, or better yet, I hit the newspaper on the table to make noise and that noise gets Duke's attention and he lets up. Kind of the same concept as the soda can with rocks in it, but since I always have a newspaper near my chair, it's handier. LOL

Bumpin the thread with some good news. Last night was the most peaceful nite weve had since i brought Zoey home. I used a trick Ive used before to teach one dog to respect another. I had completely forgotten about it, since the last time i used it was when Katey was the young dog and she was'nt respecting the senior beagle I had at the time named Jip. I called them both over for a treat, at this point Zoey knows she will not recieve a treat until she sits down and calmly accepts it. I had her sit down and calmly wait while Katey recieved her treat. She was not given a treat till she calmly sat while the Katey got her treat. Luckily she caught on quick. I repeated this twice and her attitude completely change. She no longer trys to take toys that Katey is playing with solely and Katey actually gave up her favorite ball when Zoey expressed interest in it.
