Hi, I am a new beagle owner and excited about my new 'best friend'! We (my g.f. and I) adopted her about 3 weeks ago, she is somewhere around 9 months old and such a good little girl! There are some pictures of her *here* !

She came to us 'crate' trained but has been very good about going outside, I would consider her potty trained as the only time she makes a mess is when she is being ignored. She isn't very vocal, though: she won't bark at anything but another dog. To 'signal' us that she wants to go potty she either scampers around the door, bites at my hand, or at the leash if it's visible to her. How do you go about getting your dog to complain?

She's absolutly adorable!! Welcome to Beagle World! My Monty isn't much of a barker either. We have a bell on the doorknob, and he jumps up and plays with it when he has to go outside.

One more question to throw out there: The humane society claimed she was '1 year old', but she is only about 12" at the wither and 20lbs on a full stomach. Judging by her young look, I would think she isn't more than 9 months old. Could she be young and on her way to a big 'ol beagle, or is it possible she is destined to be a petite dog?

Her appetite is pretty mild, suggesting she isn't in a growing phase at the moment. However, I don't know if there is a difference between that and her just being picky! No one can give me a good idea about how much food she might need per day, I am currently giving her 2 cups of a 50/50 mix of Royal Canin 'adult 25' and Nature's Variety Raw Instinct. She takes in about 850 calories a day (2 cups total). If I give it to her wet she will eat 'til she pukes, but dry I am lucky to get her to finish it.

Welcome to Beagle World. Some beagles are smaller. I think the classifications when they show beagles are 13 inches and 15 inches so maybe your little girl is a smaller beagle.I know there are people here who have a lot more experience than I do who can give you more information.

Welcome to Beagle World. :wave: Your beagle girl is lovely, as is your girlfriend. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif I haven't had a beagle puppy for many years, and can't remember at what age what I refer to as the, "hood" goes away. That's the dark area that comes to a V on the forehead. I see your girl still has it, so I'm guessing she's not very old.

As for food, I feed my Li'l Girl 1/2 cup plus a very small amount of canned twice a day. She's 8 years old, though, so you're probably not feeding too much right now. Since beagles tend to get overweight, you'll need to monitor food as she gets older.

Welcome! The pictures are adorable! My Bella has the same collar and harness!! Very cute...nice choice! She just turned a year the end of June and she is also quite the petite girl weighing about 22lbs so you probably have a little beagle on your hands...my other one, Badger is a hefty 38lbs! So beagles can vary quite a bit.(Don't worry the vet says he is not overweight just a big beagle!) /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/eek.gif

As for food I have been feeding Bella about a cup and a half a day of her puppy food. She eats Natural Choice Small Bites Puppy Chicken Meal, Rice & Oatmeal Formula. It is a dry formula, but I add warm water to it and make it more appealing to them. I am slowly transitioning her over to adult food and will probably cut that to about a cup and a 1/4.

I also taught Badger to ring a bell when he wants to go outside. That works really well because I don't have a direct view of the back door where he goes out so when I hear the bell I know he needs to go. I haven't gotten Bella to get the hang of it yet, but with a little persistance I think I can get her to do it.

All I did was hang a bell low enough for Badger to reach with his paw and when I was teaching him he would be standing by the door so before I would let him out I would take his paw and make it hit the bell and say potty! He caught on very fast! Beagles are smarter than people say! :hi:

Myra is a great looking pup. As for how old she is, let your vet decided. She may be younger, or she may be a 13". Either way she is a winner.

Myra is very, very sweet looking. How did you come by adopting her? I love hearing stories of how people meet there pups.

My Henry was an adult rescue and was 17 pounds when I got him about 1 1/2 years ago. He was sick which I didn't really know the extent of at the time but I remember thinking how little he was.

He's well now and last weighed in at 34 pounds. :freak:
