I understand the guilt feelings and wanting to protect him, but try not to show him that you feel sorry for him or hug him and reassure him immediately after he falls (they ARE clumsy) or bumps into something and yelps for a few seconds. They are really quick learners and he will associate this with you comforting him. It might interfere with him being a secure pup and make him scared and very fearful.
Again, I understand how you feel, and what I do is just make sure Chloe is fine when something happens and carry on as if nothing happened. She is much much much less clumsy now that she is almost out of puppyhood...
Naturally, if you feel something is wrong - call the vet immediately.
