I would look for a harness with straps around the throat / breast that are not connected with a ring. I find that the ring on such harnesses cuts into the throat much like a collar. I have a preference for handmade harnesses with neoprene or fleece lining, but I'm not sure where you can get such harnesses in the states.
Another important thing to look for when picking out a harness is that the straps that run behind the front legs be not closer than the width of your hand to the dogs front legs, otherwise they may rub while walking.
Otherwise take your dog with to the store and try on the harnesses before buying. That way you can be sure that your dog feels comfortable wearing that type of harness.
