Charlie is still doing this. I know we talked about it, but I can't seems to succeed training him not to growl. It does not happen very often only when he is on the couch"possessed", anyone sit on it while he is sleeping, he not only growls, but feisty :angryfire:
And when he is sleeping in his crate, someone accidentally bump into it, oh, you will get a nasty message from him. I kept telling him "NO", bad boy, either he didn't get it or just doesn't care. Abby has never growled at me, but she has with Béla and Rebecca when they try to move her. It seems that when she growls she saying "leave me alone"

Never, ever has she snapped, bitten or taken any sort of aggressive attitude or pose.

Does he only growl when he's trying to sleep?

Yes, only when he's trying to sleep, like you said he is trying to say"leave me alone". One must have some kind of attitude including canine. I'll just let it be, or simply say no to him and leave it.

People get like that too when they're trying to sleep...I know I do. I don't want to say it's ok, but I can understand. Maybe you could ask his vet if it's an issue that needs to be resolved or if it's just one of his people like traits and to leave it be.

I think what you are describing is Charlie's "startle reaction" -- do run this by your vet. I think the major concern is, if startled when sound asleep, he might snap (instead of just growl). Obviously not something he is doing on purpose but it can have negative outcome. Maggie had a serious problem in this regard and, since she was sharing my bed, it was definitely a concern. Curiously, since being on Prozac, this has completely disappeared. I think it has to do with the change in quality of sleep. One of those things I'll never know for sure but glad it's gone! (P.S. I am not recommending that Charlie go on Prozac -- Maggie had lots of OCD behaviors which is why we started her on it after many consultations with specialists.)

I would think that he is most likely being startled and that is how he is telling you. Sydnye does this in her sleep as well except she will bite when she wakes up. A couple nights something startled her and she woke up and bit the blankets. I am just lucky that she hasn't bit me yet, she sleeps under my covers. LOL

I don't think that scolding for this is the right thing to do. That would be like scolding a person for screaming if they are startled. It is just a natural reacton.

Caesar does the exact same thing. If we touch him while he's sleeping or sit next to him and wake him then he becomes very angry. He growls and bites. Now if I have to wake him I just call his name softly until he wakes up, then I'll approach him. This seems to work. He's all lovey this way instead of angry. I know I'm grumpy when I get woken up unexpectedly. I guess Caesar and Charlie are the same.
