Welcome to you and Bailey, Sarah.

It's been 30 years since I've had a puppy...all of mine were adult rescues. But the one common bit of advice to all puppy owners seems to be patience .

How is he doing? His picture is precious.

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone!

Things are going slow but sure with Bailey as he is still a puppy. We're crating him at night and when we're not at home and he doesn't like that too much. The first night we put him in there he barked and howled and whined for over an hour, and then finally went to sleep. He's doing better now.
Now we just need to work on sleeping through the night. He wakes us up around 2am to go pee. We pick up all foods and liquids around 7-8 because we're usually in bed by 9-10. Any tips on getting him to sleep through the night? Or will this stop as he grows?

Howdy Sarah  Welcome to Beagle World and a big welcome to the pack arroooo to Bailey. Don't know much about Florida except that there a lot of Beagle Worlders from there. They sometimes link up for sorta beagle bashes. My beagle Bagel and I are 300 miles from the nearest Beagle Worlder /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif My experience is also with adult rescues but learning how a beagle thinks is a the key, no matter what their age. They really are four legs ruled by their nose and hundres of generations of selective breeding to make them independant thinkers. They ain't like herd dogs, looking to you for direction, they evaluate their options. You will need patience as a typical beagle evaluation is "Should I respond to the human who is calling me or should I comntinue sniffing?" It is amazing how often they chose the later /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

:woohoo: Another Tampa Bayer!! A big welcome to BW -- you will love it here. You missed a meet-up with our BW owner and his pups who come down to Florida for vacation -- we met at Fort De Soto park last month. We'll look forward to having you join us next year! Bailey looks like a cutie!

He will get better in time. His bladder is still not developed enough to hold it for more than a few hours. I would suggest that you wake up around 2 AM, take him out and than go back to sleep. in a few weeks I'm guessing he will sleep through the night. It doesn't take long, and saves time on cleaning every day.

Good Luck

PS - don't forget to praise him everytime you take him out and he goes potty.... he will soon learn that going outside is good and going inside doesn't do him any good.....

A warm welcome to you and little Bailey

I'm Pat and my baby beagle is Boeing. I've had him since he was just a tiny seven-week-old pup. He's now 5 yrs and 2 mos. old and the joy of my life /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Like Chloe's mommy said, Bailey will get better in time. Once his bladder can hold, he'll sleep through the whole night without any incidents. As a puppy, my Boeing had to be let outside 2-3 times a night to pee. Then it became less frequent as he grew older.

So, hang in there /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif !!!

A really late but heartfelt welcome arrroooo to you and the handsome Bailey. We have three rescue beagles, none of which we adopted as young puppies, so I'm afraid we're not going to be of much use to you in providing advice until Bailey gets a bit older... but it sounds like you are getting lots of information from others already who have puppy experience!!

Welcome Sarah, hubby and Bailey. Bailey is so cute!! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif My Shiloh is 11 and a half, but there are lots of people in the group with younger babes--I know you'll get lots of help. One book I always recommend to new beagle parents is Puppy Preschool by John Ross. It goes month by month through puppy's first year, and was a lot of help to me, especially the section on crate training.

welcome... i have a 12 week old male named Diesel... He is acctually sleeping through the night now... but i think its mostly because it is really cold out side so he holds it as long as he can so he does not have to go out in the snow.

but welcome and i am waiting to hear all the fun stories. and cute pictures

Welcome another Tampa Bay beagler! :biglaugh:

Bailey is adorable. Jersey is about 2 1/2 years old right now, so it wasn't so long ago that I was dealing with puppy behavior. Stay patient! That was the hardest thing for me. Don't hesitate to ask us for help. I wish I had known about this board those first few months I had Jersey. I really could have used the advice.
