I will buy an SLR one day, but in the meantime, I like having a camera with me all the time in my bag, so I got the SD950 IS. If you go with a Canon SLR, the one Denise and Jen (n-Jersey) have is an excellent model (don't remember which one, but I think it's one of the Rebel XT models).

I love Canon.

O don't get me started on SLRs. I just upgraded to a Rebel XTi, and can only say good things about it. My one word of advice is compare the pictures taken with a really nice full size $300 point-n-shoot to the pictures taken with a DSLR like the Nikon D80 or Canon XTi. Then think is it really worth about 4 times the price? Don't expect to spend less than $1200 to get going on DSLR photography, if you try to cut costs you will *not* be happy with the pictures you take.

Not to turn this into a plug thread, but I got mine from Buydig.com and it came very fast and was very well priced. If anyone wants more photography advice feel free to PM me, I could clog 10 threads with diatribes on perfectionist picture-taking.

Those are great Eleanor! I will have to see if my new Canon point and shoot can do that. I have a Rebel XTi already. LOVE IT! I was playing around with the newest Nikon SLR, and I really didn't care for it.

Jamie, I just bought a Canon Power Shot A720 IS (which stands for image stabilization). It's what I used to take those pics I posted of Jersey yesterday. I think it's a great camera and it was just at $200.
