i will start from yesterday when i bought the crate, i brought it home, gave pita some food in it and she was scaird to go in, after a couple more times she went in grabbed the food and straghit went out. i tried to close the door on her a couple of times but she didnt like it. when the night came i decided to lock her in although she didnt really get used to it, the going to sleep part was good but then at about 1 in the night she started crying and i took her out and she potied(good for her!), a brought her back and put her in the crate and she didnt like, she wined and cried for about-20-25 minutes, so i guessed i moved to fast in the training and took her out and put her in the kitchen.

You were having great success until you took her out and put her in the kitchen!!! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/sleep.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

Seriously, if you know she doesn't need to go potty, try putting a dark blanket over the cage (leaving one / backside open for air). We find this helps settle Tramp down and keeps the peace if someone is up through the night as he doesn't see them.

Doronkoll,

Did you read the crate training article I sent to you? You do not want to close the door in the first few days - you want to make the crate a positive place for the dog to be and this will not happen if you start closing the door before she is comfortable in it.

Remember a crate is a safe haven not a punishment!! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Stick to the article I sent you and follow it - do not be tempted to skip ahead. I was lucky as my beagle loved the crate as soon as I set it up but some dogs need a gentler and patient approach.

It will often help if you put something in there that has your scent on it, like a worn shirt or whatever. When my dogs were crated as a pup at night, the crate was ON the bed between our legs. That way, the dog still felt as though they were sleeping with us and if they got upset, I could just put my fingers through.

I found with my crate, the pan against the bars at the botton made a strange noise that freaked the dogs out. I cut a piece of carpet to fit in below the pan and that helped.

Also, what are you using as bedding? Something cushy and cozy always seemed to help with my two.
i asked some people here if i can put her in the crae in the first night and they sayed it was ok.
and for bedding im using a towel that she likes snd two shirts.
When you give her food in it, and she grabbs it and runs out, don't try to close the door on her. When she goes in praise her, let her know its good to go it there, it might take 2-3 days, but she will like it. During the night I would close the door (the crate should be next to you so that she will "feel" you there). She will cry a little at first, but will settle down and go to sleep. Covering the crate and putting shirts with your scent is a good idea to get Pita to relax.
The best way to crate train is to expose them to the crate and let them get comfortable with it as their own space. When we first crate trained Abby Béla and I fought over the best way to do it..he wanted to take the shove her in and close the door approach which upset her a great deal. She must have cried for a couple hours straight that night.

I made a deal with him after listening to her cry that if I couldn't crate train her my way that we'd use his way, he agreed and I let her out.

The next day I moved the crate to a busy room of the house (living room). I took the blankets, toys and such she had been using and put them in there. I also put the shirt I had worn the previous day in there so that she would begin to equate mommy with crate. I left the crate door open and let her explore the crate freely, sniffing, going in and out, etc for most of that day.

That night I moved the crate from the living room to the bedroom and left the door open, allowing her to fall asleep on the bed. The next day I found her sleeping in her crate when I woke up.

I moved the crate back to the living room and whenever she would go in there on her own I'd shut the door for short periods of time. The first time I closed it and opened it right away then praised her. I did this a couple times allowing her to hear and see me before I closed it and walked out of sight. She was fine and eventually the amount of time I left her increased until finally I would close her in and go outside for a bit.

That night I dragged the crate back to the bedroom and she sleep the whole night through, door closed in her crate. We kept the crate in the bedroom for many months.....more for me than her, lol. but eventually moved it to another room. Whenever we would go out we would crate her and she'd be fine.

We never came home to temper tantrums or pee/poop fits, and she never again cried at going to her crate so I think I did a good job
:lol2:
