Got a new beagle pup. I need to fence a side yard. Will a 4 foot wire fence hold in a active male? Or do I need 5 foot. Are they climbers. Chain link or square horse fence ok.

I have 3 acres with an old electic collar fence, Do beagles respect these?

Thanks

hmmm 4 foot should contain a pup, but a friend of mine had a 5 year old Beagle that climbed a 6 foot wire fence during a storm as they were spooked by the thunder...
Fences which don't have anything for them to get their grip on are best i'd say...

We have a 6ft privacy fence, but they've never tried to climb my parents 4ft chain link. However, they have gone UNDER the chain link.

If your beagle is not a jumper or one to go after other dogs, then a standard fence 4-5 feet should be fine. If he will be alone outside without out, make sure there are no gaps and that the fence is installed to the ground our below it. My husband just added that criss-cross lattice stuff to the sections of fence that Molly could squish through.

I personally wouldn't trust any type of electric fence or invisible fencing. If your beag gets on a scent, he might run right thru it, or another dog that is not trained for it can get to your dog.

Do you have a friend with a fenced in yard that maybe you could test out?

Thanks for the help. Hope a 4 foot will work( with a tight ground wire). he is still a pup, and I don't know the ablities of an adult.

First of all welocme to the group. 4' foot chain link was more than adequate for ours. The only time I got worried was the afternoon we let the boys out and they took off like a shot toward the back of the yard. Reason? there was a 5' alligator on the other side they were trying to get at.

only 4 foot? my 6 month old can already jump the temporary 4 foot fence we have him in. as long as his front paws reach the top, he grips on then pulls himself up and over... search youtube.com for the beagle that literally climbs out of a fully enclosed cage thats gotta be about 3meters high.....amazing...

I have a small beagle - about 11 tall at the withers and 20 something pounds. She can easily climb a 4' chain link fence. I added some fencing fabric to the inside so she couldn't climb the links, and she jumped it. Seriously. So it depends on the beagle!

We have a 6' fence and boy am I glad we do. Those silly squirrels like to walk across the top and when Phoebe goes jumping after them she gets her head about a 1/2 a foot from the top. Though my in-laws have the standard 4' chain fence and she has done fine with it, but they don't have as many squirrels.
