Feet licking...and licking...and licking...

6689 Views 23 Replies 18 Participants Last post by  Mom of 2 Beagles
Our 14 month old Ruby loves to lick our feet. In the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening. If we're laying on the couch or the bed, or even if I'm sitting at my desk, there's a 90% chance the feet will get a good licking. Most licking sessions last a minimum of 5-10 minutes. If I refuse, and move them away, she just follows them around. Sometimes she'll even use her mouth and half-bite them (ouch) to hold them still. Then she'll place one or two paws on the foot to hold on while she licks every nook and cranny. My mother gets completely grossed out at the site!
Though cute, I'm wondering if this much foot (and hand at times) licking is normal for a beagle.

What's everyone's thoughts and/or experiences with this?

Maggie doesn't lick people at all and never has so I am not sure if it is typical beagle behavior or not. Ruby is sure a cute pup.
Chloe licks occasionally and I personlly love it. But it never lasts more than a few minutes...

Jersey doesn't lick feet but she will lick my hands and arms if I let her. She is also a big kiss giver. When I come home she won't settle down until I let her lick my face.
I have several big time lickers - but none that lick my feet - EXCEPT for Chloe once in a great while (she sleeps with me) will wash my toes for a couple of minutes - but if I move she stops - and she doesn't do it often. Some of my dogs are real lickers (JoJo's nickname is Miss Lick Lick), and her son, Joe, is another kisser. Princess likes to kiss, but for the most part they're not really bad about it.
ooh im so jealous - what you have there sounds like a very very nice spa pedicure!! I bet it would be nice to come home from a hard day's work and have your little puppy babying your feets

Arty doesnt lick me too much (except in the face, and only if he wants something) but sometimes when I come out of the shower smelling like fruity shower gel he'll lick my leg for a second and thats it

Holly is a foot licker but only my husbands when he has been at work and they are super smelly. Yuk. Gem is the kisser she would lick your face until it was raw if you let her.
Violet is more of a licker than Duke, though he will lick legs or hands on occasion if I've put lotion on or had my hands in food. Violet licks, but not feet very often, at least not mine or Dave's, but all three of them will lick my son's feet.
Popcorn is a dedicated foot licker - she will go for extended lengths of time like Ruby if we let her, although if we move our feet away she usually is too lazy to follow them!
Both my pups are very lick-y. Bones mostly goes for the eyes at 6:30am. Spock goes for the feet. He's not obsessive about it, but if he has the opportunity, he'll give your feet a bath, and I think it's just so funny. My boyfriend's feet are extremely ticklish, so he doesn't put up with it for very long. I'm also ticklish, but I love to laugh, so I just sit there and giggle the whole time.
Ruby is cute! Java loves to lick ears and whenever he gets the chance, he gets in a little nibble.
Marbles LOVES to lick..but he does it so much I cant stand it...I know it is a good thing, but OMG, lick, lick, lick...he is crazy dog...when you figure out the solution, let me know...hehe!!

Manda
Lucky is not a big licker. He loves to lick our cat's ears but he rarely licks us. I have to beg him to give me a kiss. And sometimes he will lick us after we eat.
I'm jealous of all of you! Daisy is THE most unaffectionate dog I've ever known.

Here's how desperate I got: Last week I taught her a new trick...I say gimme kissy! and she will lick my nose. She only does it when I have a treat though

sorry, I don't mean to laugh at your situation, it's just that it reminded me of how Chloe kisses everybody, and I mean EVERYBODY - but me!!! It drives me crazy. She will only come and cuddle when she tries to make peace after I've ignored her for a while....

Don't feel bad -- Daisy is not the only non-affectionate beagle ... I can hardly remember a time in all of Miss Maggie's 13 years that she has deigned to give me a kiss. If I try to cuddle with her, she turns her head away and gets stiff. The only times she comes to me for comfort is when she is really feeling ill. At least I know something is up when she does that!
The only time Molly won't leave me alone with the licking is after I have showered and put lotion on my legs. I don't know what it is about my lotion but she loves it. I even switched brands hoping to get her to not lick all the lotion off my legs but it didn't seem to help. She hasn't shown any inclination twoards feet though.
