Hi,
Sorry i havn't been on pc problems grrr... but i am up and running again /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif . We had to take Gem to the vets yesterday i noticed something in her right ear /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif anyway the vet said she has a ear infection and has given her some drops for her ear. We also took her to the weight clinic and she has put on 3 kgs /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/eek.gif so now she is on a diet, although the nurse told us she has a lot of muscle.Anyway we will see how she goes.

I hope poor Gem gets better soon.

I've got one dog on a diet and one needing to put weight on  It's tough when you want to secretly give the skinny dog extra biscuits and the fat dog nothing but carrot sticks :biglaugh:

So sorry about Gem's ear infection. Those things are the bane of Daisy's existence. Just keep those ears as clean as you can. At least these infections can be cured quite easily.

I always hang on to any leftover meds so that when I suspect an infection coming on I dose her with them and if it doesn't get better off to the vet we go.

Glad you're back online!!

Ear infections can often be caused by allergies, wether to food or the environment.

I would not put my dog on a diet food from the vet, I am not sure if this is what you have yours on. There are much better choicesout there for food.

My vet is always pushing his food on me to feed to my dogs and I flat out refuse. If you look at the first 5 ingredients in some one those food, it is all fillers and garbage. I have yet to see a good quality vet food.

You should consider food allergies though. Take a look at the dog's old food and list the ingredients. Try to find another food that has completely different ingredients.

If you want help comparing these, just PM me the brands that you have used and I will take a look at them for you.

Good luck (from someone who has a dog with food allergies).

Ear infections are really quite easy to deal with. It's a pain for me to clean Jersey's ears when they get bad (she's very difficult!), but usually they clear up quickly. Like Monika, I keep all my leftover ear medicine and use it when I see one coming on. I can usually just call the vets office and get a refill if I need it too. They are really great about that. I've noticed that Jersey has more problems with ear infections when her allergies are bothering her (she has Spring time allergies, just like her momma'). Also, when it's more humid and the weather is hotter she's worse. Anyway...if you keep them clean (about once a week), you should be OK!

Hi,
First of all thank you for your replies and your advice, Gem's ear is clearing up lovley now since we have been treating it /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif . We have her on Bakers Complete dry food as tinned seems to run through her, i will look into her food i never thought of that, the vets tryed to get us to put us on their food but my husband said no.
She has to go back and be weighed again in 2 weeks.I have cut her food down and she is not very happy about it as she loves her food but i know i have to do it.
Thank you once again.

Hi
As you are from the UK I feel that I must mention that Bakers is not a good food.It is full of additives to produce all its pretty colours. It's a bit like eating nothing but McDonalds.
I feed mine on James Wellbeloved which is a good quality hypoallergenic dry food. You can buy it from [email protected] it is quite expensive but you do not have to feed too much as it is good quality.A 15kg bag lasts me 4 weeks for 1 Beagle and 2 Bassets and works out about £9 per week for the three of them.
