Beagle Lillie was all mopey on Friday and then on Saturday she just did not look right, so we took her to the vet. Her fever was 105 and all tests were negative--blood work, stool sample test, xrays. She was given a shot and sent home with antibodics and pain meds (???? I guess to control the fever?????). Vets says fever without cause are rare but do occur. She was not sure where she should go on with testing (honestly we can't afford anymore random testing).


Since then she has only had a scambled egg (no interest now), a piece of cheese (no interest now) and some wet dog food (no interest again). She has not drank out of the water bowl but has taken between 4-5 ice cubes a day. Very little pee output and no poop yet.

Please help relieve my worry or point me in another direction.

Poor girl.

I haven't experienced anything like this but, from what I've read, the fever could be due to some sort of infection. That would explain why the vet gave her antibiotics.

I hope she's better soon. Please keep us posted.

I wish I could relieve your worry but your post leads me to advise that <span style="text-decoration: underline">you need to call your vet</span>. It has been long enough for both the antibiotics and pain meds to kick in and the lack of eating and especially the lack of drinking are of major concern. You need to be concerned about dehydration -- a few ice cubes are not enough. A dog's normal temp should not be above 102.5 F so 105 is quite concerning.
If your vet does not know what to do next, you need to get Lillie to an internist (associated with a veterinary hospital) asap! I would agree that you don't want a vet to just do tests randomly but you have to do something now.

Hubby is at home today and I am glad to report that Lillie is currently outside hunting, not as hard as Chloe, but she has her nose to the ground and tail in the air. For some reason the antibodics just took longer to jump start her into feeling better. She has started drinking out of the bowl now (not as much as I would like but it is better than the ice cubes) and she ate a boiled chicken breast last night plus 2 doggies biscuits.

Oh and last night was the first time I took a doggie temp myself

. I wrote all over it DOGGIE USE ONLY! Don't think anyone would want to stick it back in their mouths

. It was 101 so she is mending FINALLY!

I am so relieved to read your update -- thank goodness Lillie is feeling more like herself! [Re temp: I was on the phone asking my vet's advice as my Maggie was having a seizure -- he actually asked me what her temp was!! Like I could handle taking her temp at that point ...]

Lillie is eating boiled chicken but I am having to give her water and pedilite by syringe. She has had no temp spike since the weekend. I spoke with the vet today and they say it might be 3-4 days until the antibodics kick in. Today was the 4th day. She is still so weak. She was also prescribed metacam and a friend of mine who used to be a vet tech said sometimes that makes them sleepy and upset stomach. I will keep her on the baytril and not give her the metacam tomorrow. Vet also asked me to bring in a urine and stool sample so I am gonna do that tomorrow. Hopefully they will be able to see if their is a UTI otherwise the testing will just be hit and miss. I can't afford hit and miss and their are no vet hospitals around here.

I am so devastated, I can hardly work or eat or sleep. I am so scared she is not going to make it through this. Plus her sister Beagle Chloe and brothers Stray Jack and Boxer P dont understand why Lillie is not playing.

So can it happen that a Beag takes that long to get the meds in their system?????

I wish I could offer some sage advice, but all I can do is tell you that you and Lillie are in my thoughts and prayers. It's so distressing when one of our furkids is sick, and we don't know what it is or what to do for it.

I am sorry to hear that Lillie is not rebounding as quickly as you (and we) would want. I would caution you against dropping/changing her meds without talking with your vet. If you have confidence in him, then you need to follow through with his advice. If you don't have confidence in him, then you need to get Lillie to another vet for a second opinion. It has been my experience with Maggie that antibiotics kick in pretty quickly -- have never had to wait four days for that to happen. Why did your vet prescribe Metacam? It is my understanding that that is usually prescribed for inflammation related to arthritic conditions. Any meds can cause an upset stomach if not enough food is consumed. Baytril has upset Maggie's stomach, particularly if she is not eating. Sending gentle hugs to you and Lillie!

Ok, I haven't read through all the replies yet, so may be off base on this one, but ... a fever without cause in a Beagle makes me think disc disease/back pain. How old is Lillie? Do her eyes appear glassy? Is she walking with a stiff gait or slight hunch to the back?
Another thing. <span style="font-weight: bold">It may not be the antibiotics making her feel better, but the Metacam. </span>Wondering why Baytril was prescribed, though, if the cause is still not verified? Baytril is VERY strong, and usually for kidney or urinarty tract infections. Might be better if you could get her on plain amoxicillin ...

If the problem was going on unnoticed for a while, it might take longer for the meds to help. Hopefully the Vet can determine what this is and get her feeling well again! If the tests come back inconclusive, you might want to urge the Vet to palpate her spine or do an x-ray ... believe me, if by some chance it is spinal, the $ spent now can save you thousands should the disc rupture or slip.
Ask the Vet if you can give her baby aspirin (or dog aspirin, same thing). That might help reduce the fever even more and if it is joint related, can also help with that as well. Good luck, I hope it's nothing serious & glad to hear she is feeling better

Glad she is better. Silly Beagles eat alot of disgusting things that may not always react well with them. Hope that is all it was.
