So, I don't know if this has ever happened to anyone else before. Cassidy (beagle) and Nubi (boxer/lab) have been having freeroam of the living room for nearly 2 weeks now. They have been doing great, only playing and destroying their toys and never having any accidents in the house.

Now, I come home yesterday, and it was like literally, crap hit the fan. I don't know what got into them! They tore up the house. They urinated and defecated all over the living room and kitchen and smeared it everywhere. Chewed up their dogs beds and peed on the pillows. Smeared poo on the couch. Tore up the dog bed to thousands of peices along with tuffs of flush EVERYWHERE. They also managed to chew up William's expensive work boots, tearing out the inners soles and lining of them.

Now, I know, people shouldn't leave things out that they don't want destroyed, but then again, some things you don't think about because they have never done it before. They have never chewed on our shoes or peed on our pillows and couches before. I just don't know what got into them. I was livid! It took us an hour and a half to clean up the mess, between wiping, scrubbing, sweeping, spraying....sigh....anyone else have horror stories or even pictures of this type of incident?

Oh boy! Can't say we have ever experienced destruction of that magnitude!
We did lose a sofa to Roscoe, a laptop, and some remotes.
Cole did a small number on a new sofa not long ago.
Gino has yet to do any damage (knock on wood).

I really think we learned a lot with Roscoe.

The relieving themselves inside seems odd, considering they have been fine up til now. Were they alone longer than usual? Has their exercise routine changed? I know with this bitter cold weather we have been experiencing, the boys have been inside a lot more than usual.

I understand. Don't know why they changed all of a sudden. SOmething must have set them off.

We have a new puppy, but we have had him as long as they have been allowed to roam. I did speculate though, possibly someone was walking the neighborhood that got them all spilled over...but then again....Cassidy likes to chew up dog beds for some reason....Nubi likes the window so the blinds were her fault...-sigh-

That stinks!!! I have been thinking about letting my two out of the kitchen but all seems calm and safe so I think I will just leave them in there when we are out.

Did they have a view of the front door or window?? That can really set beags off especially if you have protectors. I think when they have free roam of the house, sometimes it is very stressful for them with trying to protect the house and their pack.

My goodness, they did do a number on you, didn't they? Well, let me see, with our first beagle, Chipper, he destroyed a couch in 30 minutes flat, just ripping the cushions to pieces, chewed holes in three bed mattresses...just enough to get to the springs, numerous pillows, shoes, slippers, socks, mittens, belts, and of course toys of the kids, etc. Now Cobi, 9 years old now, only destroys things that are in the kitchen...like the refrigerator door...so he can open it. Casie, age 2, loves mittens and shoes, the ends of blankets. He is my pee'er. Anything that is MINE, he will be on....my side of the bed for example. If we are going to be gone more than 2 hours, we crate them, knowing that they will be fine, and in need of attention when we get back. I don't know that it's a beagle trait, as my folks' poodles were worse. Good luck with them....

Oh my goodness - you must have been horrified! I too have a picture in my mind of the devastation! I wonder what got into them too?

It would not surprise me if this were the case.

When we first got Willie, we tried to do without crating him during the workday, just confined him to the living room and dining room. Well, the living room offers him a view out the front door window and has a big picture window that views onto the front porch as well. Apparently, there was a neighborhood dog roaming at large, and as soon as I got home, I knew it had been hanging out on our porch, because it left a pile of poo. Willie must have gone nuts at a strange dog hanging out on the porch, because even though he'd not been destructive previously, he rammed over the gate that was confining him to "his" two rooms, and got at a bunch of stuff that was supposedly off limits to him and shredded it everywhere. We had to start crating, then, because he is just too unpredictable if his territorial instinct gets piqued.

Willie's definitely a shredder, though, when left to his own devices. We can't even put a cushy bed or even a soft blankie in his crate, because he will rip it to shreds.
