Anyone been watching episodes of the "Dog Whisperer" when he is doing something with beagles? It just amazes me. He deals with them so differently than the other dogs. One of the things I have noticed is they are never "walking" a beagle. He always says they behave and learn better when tired and it's always him or his clients with roller blades and bicycles. Now, I have a bicycle, but I fear Cecil would run in front of a wheel. He shows how to hold the leash, but I just don't know. Anyone tried the running the beagle with a bike? I have never seen one of the shows where someone is just "walking" a beagle. The beags just seem to look at him with that "o.k., I'll look like I know what you want..do a little of it and when you leave, I'm back to being a beagle." Any comments on this one?

I tend to support his philosophy of these high energy pups. I have never tried roller blading nor riding a bike with Bailey. However, we have tried jogging and I must say he loves it.
It's funny how just about the time I get going he catches a whiff of something and darts off to the side in the grass. With this heat over the past few months we haven't been out as much, but once it cools off a bit we will be back at it. I am just worried about him getting too hot... :biglaugh:

I don't think that would work with us. Jersey loves to go from side to side as we walk...she follows her nose, not my commands while we're on our walks. I haven't been the best trainer when it comes to things like that. As for rollerblades, the last time I was on those things I ended up with a bruised tailbone and had to use one of those doughnut things to sit on for a week. Our walks are her time...I'm a bit lenient (sp??) with them. As long as she's not eating anything, I just let her sniff and enjoy being outside.

Folks, I need to do something. My Cecil is a runner and this morning at 7 AM we did an acre boundry of running and I am shot. I know it's great for her and me, but I need an alternative. We do the dog park once a week as any more than that interfers with work and the girls don't really like going more than that. I've done it and they don't enjoy it the same way. They run after each other around the pen, but Cecil want to flat out run and for a period of time. I wish I could find some old fashion street skates with wheels and then I think that would be my answer. I'm just too afraid of her with the bike. Brandy is a non issue as she likes only to jog. Cecil is a bullet. Also, I try so many of Cesar's things and they just look at me like I'm crazy. LOL

I noticed that too. Jersey is just fine now, thanks for asking. She gave her momma' a good scare!
Marti...I don't know what to tell you. Jersey has a lot of energy, but a nice long walk is good enough for her. Tonight we were at the park for only about 40-45 minutes before she got bored and we left. It's taking a lot less to get the energy out now that she's getting older. There were times we'd be there three hours and she'd still be going strong.
You had mentioned one time that you had seen an agility course around here somewhere. Maybe that would be helpful? Or maybe one of those sit down bicycles that would be less dangerous to swerve out of her way if she ran in front of you. Does she do fetch?? I bought one of those plastic ball throwers at Ross for a few bucks one time...the ball flies with it. It would be less strenuous for you and she could run and run retrieving the ball. I don't know how any of those ideas sound to you. I really don't have to worry so much about this problem.
P.S. If you find an agility course around here, let me know where.

Marti - I got a pair of those old fashioned four wheeled skates with the stopper brake this past year at Sportsmart. The brand name was Sketchers. My kids tease me that they are training rollerblades - but I have no pride and will continue my safer wheeling. Now, as for skating with the beag????? Wouldn't work with mine - they sniff more than walk. At least I wouldn't need the brake I guess!! Julie

I LOVE Cesar, but keep missing the episode with the beagle! Would love to see how he handles the "nose issue"..... :biglaugh: .....one thing I'm sure about though, he did it well.
:biglaugh: Laughing out loud at the "visual" of ME on rollerblades with Maggie along.... :biglaugh: ...OH MY that's the best laugh of the week! The emergency room nurses would LOVE that story......(as they set my broken arm and dressed my bloody wounds.... :biglaugh: )

Tell your kids that four wheel skates are NOT training skates for rollerblades. Its like comparing a car to a motorcycle. Tell them they are "old school" or "retro". They will understand that.

"Retro, Indeed"! (make sure that you do not misplace your skate key)! Eh MD?! :evilgrin: :thumbup: But gone are the days when a dog could run alongside your bicycle when I was a kid! Even on the Hiawatha trail between Idaho & Montana you must keep a leash on your dog! 
I ordered me a pair online today and told Cecil that she would be able to run more very soon. Let's see if it works. If so then part of my dreams will have come true. Thanks for the tip!
Also, you mentioned that your beag sniffed more than walked. Well, when I walk them this is true also; however, when I say to Cecil "Let's run" then off she goes and just straight out runs. We do this around the perimeter of our acre lot daily so we shall see on the street. (Note very little vehicle traffic, lots of dog walkers and some with as many as three dogs and one person, lots of bicyclers and also joggers).

I'm fairly certain that at least Snoopy and Julia would be able to figure out to stay clear of the wheels on a bike...but I can just imagine any one of them catching the scent of something interesting and taking me with them in an off-roading adventure that would surely end with me in need of a medic! :eyes: I have pondered how one of the children's bike trailers would work for beags...though that doesn't do much to tire them out...if anything, I'd be falling-over tired and they'd be well-rest and ready to go some more!

I caught the episode the other night and he keeps them on a short leash and its held at the end of the handle bars. The bike he showed on was a tri-cycle that had the wider handle bars. He did also show with an electric wheelchair, but the dog was tied closer to the back.
I could imagine trying to roller blade with my two yet? I would have road rash all over my body.

I would never try that with Oliver and a bike. He gets too excited and I don't wanna crash :angryfire:
I do take him for hikes every once in awhile and hiking is one of his favorite things to do. And he's tired the rest of the day too, which isn't so much a bad thing /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

Bringing this back up as I just saw the Beagle show (or atleast the last 15 minutes of it). One of the girls does the sniffing and running in circles while barking. Especially where the birds tend to flock to.
I like the Dog Whisperer but his techinques do scare me sometimes.
But the image of a fat lady on roller blades being pulled by 2 Girls would be priceless!!!!!!!!

Your girls are young, and will act puppy-silly for quite awhile. I don't think you have to worry yet.....only if the behavior continues into adulthood in an obsessive way.
My Maggie did some pretty silly stuff; I used to worry about her common sense (still do sometimes :biglaugh: )
Just enjoy your girls and take lots of pictures!

My boyfriend and I run with Fin and Jason uses rollerblades with him as well. He loves to run and it helps us get a workout too! I plan on buying a pair this year though cause I want to have some fun also. I've never tried a bike but I've seen on TV that they sell dog leash specifically for bike riding. It's this metal thing that hangs off the side I think. Anyways if I find something on it I will post here. But yes I advise anyone willing to try rollerblading with their dogs. It's best if you know how to skate well before grabbin the dog...

I took Spencer jogging the other day for the first time and I have to say that it was a bit of a battle. He kept stopping to sniff or running off to the side pulling me off the trail. By the end of my run he had it down pat and was actually tired when we got home. I will most likely take him again. It has just gotten so cold here that I haven't run outside in a couple of weeks.
