Is bloat common in beagles? Just wondering because I keep reading things about bloat, and I read that a dog drank ice water and it caused bloat and that ice will do that!
If its common in beagles how can you tell if they have it??

I had to look up :read: Bloat because I had not heard of it before. Everything I have read says that it is frequently reported that deep-chested dogs, such as German Shepherds, Great Danes, and Dobermans are particularly at risk.

Seems like Bloat is simply a term for eating air. The air gets trapped and the stomach gets twisted.

I give my dog ice cubes and ice water all the time. I know my vet knows that and she is not concerned.

???
Symptoms of bloat include dry heaves, drooling, distended usually painful belly. It occurs mostly in large, big chested dogs. It causes internal swelling which compresses the liver and other organs and is always an emergency. I have not seen a beagle with this condition in the months I've been in emergency. Although unusual, I would always check with the vet if the dog is presenting these symptoms. Hope this helps. Julie
Found this on the topic of bloat. I'm not worried about it...my dog doesn't eat that much of it and mostly it gets melted quickly anyway.
I know that it can happen in basset hounds. I wouldn't worry about it. I would worry more about slipped disks.
