Hi all,

My dog Scottie who is usually fine with our two other beagles Nessie and Chai, has started to be very aggressive towards them for reasons I can't pinpoint. She will be absolutely fine and then out of the blue, snarl and bear her teeth or lunge at them.
As she is a small beagle, I usually manage to stop a fight before it happens but today she attacked Chai when I wasn't in their enclosure. I managed to separate them and now Scottie is isolated in our patio, away from the others so she can cool off.
The only change to her has been that she has been put on antibiotics for a chronic stomach infection she has had since puppyhood, when she came from a neglectful background. She also has had food aggression and resource guarding issues as a puppy, but has mostly worked through that and it has never been anything like this, usually she will just snarl and bark but never attack or instigate a fight.
Any insight would be really helpful

She might feel ill on the antibiotics which might make her more protective of herself. Did she just start the meds? Which one is she taking?

She started the meds a week ago, the aggressive behaviour started a few days ago but maybe its an accumulative effect. She is on metrodizanole 25mg a day for 2 weeks, this Friday will be her final dose.

Im guessing the antibiotic is the cause since its a stong antibiotic. Did your vet do a stool test? Does your dog have Giardia or parasites?
Provide fresh water at all times. If your dog looks like its panting take her to the vet.
While she's on this antibiotic keep her separated since she's aggressive.
By the way...if she has Giardia or parasites the other dogs could get it.. AND you MUST wash your hands thoroughly after touching your dog since humans can get infected.

The vet did do a stool test, no Giardia or parasite, they also did an xray and found that a small part of her colon was inflamed hence the antibiotics. But when she came to us, she did have tick fever and a severe tapeworm infection that took a while to clear up, the vet thinks that's possibly why she has colon issues now. She has access to fresh water all day, but she isn't very good at drinking it, she needs to be coaxed with a treat floating inside before she will. I will keep her isolated from the other dogs for a few days, hopefully she will be less stressed once the antibiotic wears off.

Hi all,

Just wanted to say thanks for the advice, Scottie is doing much better since her last antibiotic. I'm still keeping her isolated, but she is less grumpy and even wagging her tail when she sees the other beagles coming. I do think the medicine was making her feel off, as of now I'm giving her lots of water and hopefully all will be well again. 😊😊
