My husband wanted to know if there is anything that you can spray on wood so the dog won't chew it anymore. Molly found the steps, and won't really stop chewing on it, and he gets more and more upset. Anyone got an idea/suggestion for us? Thank you!

people will tell you to spray bitter apple on it, but that hasn't stopped sophie from chewing through 2 collars, 2 harnesses, 3 leashes and 2 dog beds. she seemed to stop chewing the chairs all on her own.

Can you cover it with something? There was a Bitter Apple gel for hard surfaces that we had when ours were young. Puppies chew. Ours did too. They grow out of it. What about sprinkling some black pepper around the places she chews?

we put a towel over it... i dont care much about the step, but my husband is not happy about it... she mostly like chewing on my fingers, they are full with scratches, and try to put a chew toy into her mouth soonest she starts.

Nylabones are a good thing in helping chewing. Also chilly bones and ice cubes.

tried the chilly bone yesterday, she is licking it and then leaves it alone. I started training her today with apple, and put them in the freezer, and she loves that... and she is listen to me when I tell her to sit

My trainer told me to get spray bottle of water and lemon juice. When you catch her chewing, take her to the steps, tell her NO! and spray the water IN her mouth on the roof. She will get the hint that she doesn't like the taste of the wood or punishment. It's harmless. My trainer also said you can discipline your dog anytime as long as you discipline them the day that they did the unwanted behavior. So, take her to the stairs maybe once a day and point to the spot, and then spray her in the mouth with it. I have begun this with my 2 dogs for digging. Seems to be helping.

If you are going to use a spray bottle it would probably be more effective to use it while she is chewing the stairs. A puppy is not going to make the connection if you just take her to the stairs and spray her at random times. She is more likely to become afraid of you. If you do put lemon in the water be careful not to get it in her eyes.
Puppies dig and chew and it just takes time and patience. She will outgrow these behaviors.

If the spray bottle doesn't work, try an airhorn. We used a spray bottle until he figured out that it is a waterfountain!
Then we tried the airhorn for nipping/biting us. That habit was broke in about 5 days with the airhorn.
Make sure Molly has plenty of okay stuff to chew, and offer it to her often. To remind/teach her what's okay and what's not okay, use cue words such as leave it and take it.

I don't mind her chewing anything, but my husband is not happy about the stairs, so I will do something about it. It is so hard to say no to her. For the past 3 days I carry 2 of her toys with me around, and soonest she starts bite I give it to her, well try to give it to her before she gets my fingers. Thank you everyone for your help!!

Buddy was chewing my wooden stairs also. Believe it or not i put a piece of duct tape over where he was chewing and he hasnt gone back to it in over 2 weeks. I was able to go to Home Depot and get some duct tape that was the same color as my stairs so it doesnt look that bad.

He went through a Nylon bone the other day in 3 hours. I need to get some tougher ones.

I remembered I used a spray I found at a PetCo that smells bad for them. I used it on the couch and table. I can't remember the name of it but I assume that any pet store carries it or something like it. It worked for me

We've used Bitter Apple but found Bitter Yuck to be better.

I agree with jassy, you wouldn't want to just discipline her at random, she won't make the connection. The duct tape and air horn sound like good ideas

Molly hasn't touched the stair since my hubby put a towel over it, so I don't do anything right now... right this moment she is sleeping right in front of it... she is so cute

yeah i dont think the spray bottle at random times would work but if you did it when u caught her in the act it would probably work. but like others said, just stick a toy in her mouth she'll outgrow it soon.
