While on a walk today, Mugsy snagged a chunk of used (ewwww...) gum off the sidewalk. There was still some left behind and I got the majority of it out of his mouth, but he did swallow a little (probably less than a pea-sized) bit of it. He got a ton on his face too, which was a joy to pick off. Should I be concerned? I've read some things online that say gum isn't bad, but I know I've read that it could also be deadly depending on the ingredients. Is there something I should be watching for? I'm going to call the vet too just to see what they say. I'd rather be safe than sorry.

I don't think there's anything to be really worried about (if I'm mistaken, please correct me!!).
I would just keep an eye on him for the next 24 hours, make sure he poops everything he needs to poop (it will probably wash out with his food).

I think gum is usually not a problem. Last night I found a package of gum with Xylitol on our patio table. I don't often lose my temper but I was really angry. It was within Maggie's reach and I have preached over and over to my daughter and her friends that it cannot be here at all. We were very lucky that I found it before Maggie. Most gum is harmless but it never hurts to check with the vet.

Just got off the phone with the doc and she said that since it was pre-chewed (yuck!), most of the chemicals should have been absorbed by the person who chewed it, so it should just pass through with all the other junk he picks up.

Just got back from the dog park and a woman said she had gotten three e-mails from friends that day saying that there has been a reformulation in the sugar free ingredient and that it can be toxic to dogs. Certainly the vets advice from Angi is right on, I bet it applies to unchewed gum...
